You should already know what's happening.

Yes, they come in the middle of the -100°C winter wearing cloth parkas and patiently die right before my front door. Sometimes they're lucky enough to roll muffalo wool parkas, but then actual pack muffalos die below -45°C.

In the end result is the same - traders die and you get to loot their goods and equipment without any reputation loss. In fact, you can even gain some by rescuing dying party members.
