did something change, My geothermal gens stop generating at night for some reason

They don't stop. But maybe you are using more heating power at a colder night plus your solars are offline and your wind generators may also not produce much power atm?

What makes you think the TG stops at night?

It seems wind turbines generate most power in rain so I'd say wind turbine is best in humid areas such as jungle. Not sure some areas has longer day?

One thing to note is that you cannot build most thing under wind turbines, except solar generators and small things like chair or farm, so solar still hold some merit for space efficiency.
You can grow under the wind turbines.
I usually grow hay as I don't care if it fails in winter

I can't imagine a situation where I will choose anything but geothermal. My colonies were based on geo location simply because they are the core element in sustaining viable colonies.

I actually ALWAYS use a mix of them all with 2+ switched battery rooms
Even throw in a few fuelled generators next to critical stuff like fridge or turrets if there's a wood source.
