Im sorry, i know they are sort of helpful, but the expectations buffs are driving me bananas. They suck, so much.

in what world is it a good idea for my pawns to get more miserable AFTER they achieve stuff. legit, they start out super happy, an as the colony gets BETTER they GET WORSE!!! an considering how important happiness is to a colonists work speed, this is even more bizarre. I would 100% rather my colonists not get the buff an in return never get the debuff than what it currently stands as. Yeah, itll be harder at first, but at least i wont have to deal with sudden vaguely inconsistent changes in productivity due to having too many chickens or because of ai mainframes... PARTICULARLY CHICKENS. its the worst, because they make MORE WORK an yet my colonists suddenly say "fuck it, im too good for this" :\

Work, work, work. It's hard work all the time. Why can't a colonist burn out ?

Anyway, the bonuses are supposed to give colonists a chance early, not punish them later. Later you can have pretty rooms, beer, beer, beer, good meals, animal friends, parties, weddings, television, games and stuff.

There's a very important reason for those Buff/Debuff : Taking into account the gradual evolution of their own comfort.

And you have to suggest an alternative to the current means for that, because if it didn't exist :
- Early game would have your colonist broken all the time because they have no comfort.
or
- Late game the colonist would never be impeded by stress and psychic event because they are drowning in wealth.
or
- RW couldn't make a difference between sleeping on the floor eating paste/raw and sleeping on goldenbed eating lavish food.

So far I think your problem is only a question of Balance. You changed something drastically in your colony and you are surprised it mattered so much, if you could give more of the context I think it would help Tynan know what to tweak.
"Sam Starfall joined your colony"
"Sam Starfall left your colony with all your valuable"

Mental illness is arguably more common in modern times than it was before (it may have just been less documented in the past).  More material belongings or comforts isn't always a direct path to happiness.

In a very abstract sense, this is exactly what the expectations mood offset models.

I think that if anything, these buffs should go down slower than comfort goes up - because otherwise, you don't want to actually increase quality of live for your colonists.

1. Please make people unable to move through deep waters. I don't like raiders cosplaying Jesus.

the problem isnt that theres some buff for colonies that are poor, the problem is its an arbitrary thing. the player has no real control over when they have the buffs EXCEPT to keep on being poor. it encourages boring play an isnt particularly fun(similar to the messed up play the storytellers currently encourage). Its just blatantly un-intuitive.

Maybe once it was necessary, but at this point we have the social system and the joy system and those systems should be able to provide enough of a buffer to colonists moods that they can get past early game. Its not like we need MORE debuffs to mood. hell, at the moment being in a dark room can make people suffer mental breakdown for crying out loud :\
