Question about character navigation

How do characters do path planning?  Do they use an A* algorithm, or Dijkstra's?  Would there be anyone interested in a mod that, for instance increases the cost of moving from a non-dirt to dirt path in a home area to prevent dirt from spreading, or traffic areas like in DF?
