Can we add existing settlements / colonies / species to the planet where the colonists land.

Some of the trading can come from these.
As well as attacks.

This has been thought of. One possibility has us dealing with natives to the moon, and it's been floated that turning the trading ships into trading caravans could handily deal with the "why don't they just hop on the ship and leave?" questions.

I think fighting natives makes more sense than fighting raiders, at this point. Natives want our territory, and so might be willing to go all-in. Sensible raiders would never attack such a well-defended settlement, as they tend to go for low-hanging fruit, so the only explanation for their attacks is that they're hopped up on Psycho.

I like the trading caravans idea. As well as natives idea.

Pirates could be separate. Keep you on your toes, so that you can't keep stuff lying around, or they will steal it.

Trading caravans would only exist on a world that has well established and developed settlements.  This would then mean that you are no longer stranded crash survivors on a hostile, barren Rimworld, but stranded crash survivors on a well populated planet bustling with activity.  This would then raise the question of why you stay in your meager crash site, when you can just pick up your supplies and join a thriving city that would need to exist for there to be trade caravans.  It completely shatters the desperate, stranded feeling that Tynan is going for with the narrative in RimWorld.

The small "questions" on raiders and trade ships are a little out of context. Raiders does make sense because its a risk / reward thing. Raiders (or pirates, in real life) put their lives in danger to make a buck, or in this case, steal a cushy base, or wanting to strip anything of value. Where as if there were natives they would either be weak enough to be a complete write  off combat wise, or advanced enough to have cities (which defeats the point of the game).

As for traders, saying you could just climb aboard implies SO much its not even funny. It implies : The traders have room for the colonists, have provisions for the colonists, the crew on-board would tolerate a bunch of complete strangers hopping on, and that the trading vessel could even LET on hitch hikers according to company policy. Not to mention it makes more sense having ships miles above the ground than caravans for other reasons... Caravans could potentially be  ambushed by the colony which breaks progression, and having such well organized and wealthy caravans intensely hints again that there is society on that moon elsewhere... Which would make many things in the game not work as well. Why even make a large colony if there is potentially one much larger and more established elsewhere?

All and all, having the colony "stuck" on that rock in the middle of space, at the mercy of whatever lands / comes in orbit makes more sense.
Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.

I'm not so sure its hostile, barren world. Its bustling with animal live, which means it not barren for sure. As for hostile.. well its that for sure :D, but it also does appear there are other settlements somewhere... otherwise where do all the travelers come from and what is their travel goal, that pass by during a game?
Gamers are young at heart and creative thinkers. Shall we play a game?

If you've seen Firefly then this is usually an easy question to answer:

A. They didn't land.

B. How would you get in? Through the sealed bulkhead made of space metals?

C. They shot you as you tried to get in.

D. You got in, but no one knew how to fly it. Which makes sense because all of you crash landed onto the planet with basic knowledge. Now maybe if one of you was a space pilot then sure, it'd be plausible and opens the game up to space exploration added as a DLC/expansion down the line or maybe a feature with the extra funding yohooooo.

E. The Empire found you and your vessel. Game Over.

Assuming that everyone's seen Firefly is generally a poor way of keeping people from asking questions that you know seem to come up frequently.

But seriously, who lets strangers onto their ship? And most people have seen Star Trek. Star Trek Enterprise and her crew don't invite offworlders with low tech onto their ship. As a general rule. Han Solo didn't. And who says what size the ships are anyway, we haven't even seen any examples. I assume the ships are similar to Firefly/Chronicles of Riddick. Most are freighters most are small, etc.
