Best type of Dog?

Hi fellow Rimworld players. My parents say that I can have a dog if I want (I'm 16 btw) but I will have to walk/feed/clean/train it myself. So I have 2 questions.

1. Should I get the dog?

2. If I do what dog should I get?

(I do realise that I probably won't be able to play Rimworld as much if I have to look after a dog)

It depends on a lot of things.

Do you live in a house or a flat? In the center of a city, suburbs, small town, country? Is there a lot of green space(parks, unused fields, forests) nearby?

How much time are you willing to devote to the dog? What kind of activities do you want to do together with it?

What kind of personality do you think would fit the best with your family? Do you live together with young kids?

Well, my experience was that even though I had a dog I left most of the work to my parents. If you do that you will have a dog to play and will be able to keep playing games. Oh men, I was such a jerk growing up. Don't do that.

Also, This is something I will take to the grave, as long as it is your parents house, you should respect their wishes. Since you are 16, maybe you should see what lies ahead in the future, and if there will be enough time to cherish these moments with the dog.

Other than that, buy a Pug.

It varies greatly depending one what kind of person you are and where you are.  Labrador retrievers and golden retrievers are both kinda high-energy and really need someone whom is also high-energy to take them for walks and/or toss a ball for them (or get a Chuck-It which is a plastic ball flinger that's earned a place of poppularity among dog enthusiasts and can double or triple how far you can toss a ball -- essential if you have an eager ball-hound whom really needs to burn energy).  They are generally easy-going personalitywise though in that they usually aren't aggressive even toward visitors.

Border collies are a bit more intense, by contrast, even more needful of exercise and tend to really go for ball chasing (though there are always individuals).  Huskies are also very high-energy but don't tend to focus as much, its not too common to find huskies whom will retrieve balls for instance so long, vigorous walks are a must for huskies.

Some lower-energy dogs would include malamutes -- they tend to fare better with staying in most of the time, though with their long fur they do need a good brushing particularly in the spring to early summer to clear out their winter coat fluff.

I am very fond of German Shepherds myself, but they are really bond-oriented, meaning they have to be with their human a lot and really need a lot of time giving them attention.

I think one of the easiest-going dogs not requiring a lot of exercise I've ever had is a Saint Bernard, but -- if you didn't already know -- those are huge dogs, your parents might not be keen on getting one.

Whatever you decide, I really hope you'll consider adopting a rescue from a shelter.  Some tender pets and scritches, you can really make a dog wag happy for a dog that probably hasn't had much to wag about previously.  If you have your heart set on a particular breed, there are breed-specific rescue shelters all over the place.

Thanks guys for all the great suggestions. Here are some of the factors i guess i need to consider.

Live in the suburbs.

I have time to walk a dog once a day.

I usualy hang out with my friends at the park after school and play video games in the evening.

My parents and siblings all go to work/school during the say but one of my parents is part time so the dog would only be alone for 3 hours a day.

Also i am adopting from a shelter and i dont care what breed do ill probably choose one while i am there but i was just wondering if there were any breeds that would be favorable to my lifestyle.
Hope that is good and thanks again for the advice.

My best recommendation based on that would be a golden retriever.  They tend to be the easiest-going for hanging out with friends.

It all depends how much effort you want to put into it. In my experience, the smarter the dogs, the more time you'll need to put in in order to keep them from being bored or developing behavior problems. Particularly with energetic breeds.

My wife has a mini-american eskimo right now that she rescued from.. well, I don't really know where. I honestly said "no more dogs", haha.

We've had everything from mutts to great danes to labs, and as much as I did not think I'd like a cutesy girl dog, it's just the right mix of stupid and energetic to be a "fun" pet - it's equally happy getting tons of attention or going for runs as it is just sitting next to you on the couch. It's also incredibly loyal and well behaved even though she hasn't really tried to train it, and listens very well. So, I'd certainly recommend one of those I guess.

Otherwise, my best dogs have all been mutts.

Kudos to you.  I really like German Shepherds, and some other breeds, but given the horrific ongoing euthanizing of tens of thousands of dogs -every single month- in the U.S.A. basically due to overpopulation, I just can't fathom paying a breeder to breed more when there are so many in shelters needing homes.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with a mutt, and even if you prefer a breed, there are a lot of breed-specific rescues shelters, too.

Dachshund (ignoring the fact in German it means "Dog bred to HUNT BADGERS"!). I like their energy and huge ego.

Oh, what dog you should have ? NOT dachshund. They're quite stubborn.

Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.
