pretty straightforward... when people have a lot of time and not much to do, they write. prisoners in the US often write novels during their long sentences, and being trapped on a rimworld isn't much different.

as a resource, writing (sizes/length: poems, short stories and novels) could rely on paper produced from wood, and the relevant skill would of course be the art skill.

There is a modpack which contains something like this: Arbitration Realistic Research

I'm not sure if the modpack author got that from another mod or if that was something that was original to that modpack.

In this case there is writing both for research and for entertainment, pretty cool mechanic.

IIRC:
Paper is made at the brewery using either cloth or wood.
Books are bound at a new workbench (writing table); made from 20 paper and 5 leathers of any type
Then books can be written as either research or regular - done at the writing desk again using the art skill.

Supert

Let me develop your idea:

New technology (medieval or industrious):

Paper. I will not explain what it does, ok?

Materials:

Paper - can be obtained with Paper Machine. Really crappy textile material.

Workbenches:

Paper Machine - works similar to Nutritient Paste Dispencer. Wood goes in, paper goes out.
Writer's table - allows production of Writing (original). It requires textile and Art skill.
Artist's workbench - allows production of Painting (original). It requires textile and Art skill.
Sculptor's workbench - allows production of Sculpture (original). It requires raw materials and Art skill.

Can workbench have two jobs with different skills? If not:
Apprentice's workshop - allows production of art's copies. Reqires the same material type, original piece of art and utilizes Craft skill instead. Of course, original piece of art is not consumed.
If one workbench can have two jobs with different skills, these jobs should be available from respective workbenches.

New items:

Writing/Painting/Sculpture (original) - material should have lesser impact at item's price than in current state of game. For example, let assume it to be o(material + Art).
Writing/Painting/Sculpture (copy) - Price is o(material + (Craft / 20) * original Art). Copies are almost always cheaper and uglier version of original, but talented craftsman can create indistinguishable ones.
Paintings could be installed just like sculptures and pawns could read books.
