Do people with bonded animals get sad when you slaughter their pet for food?

Yes. It's the same as if they die in any other fashion.

Selling them is a different de-buff, possibly worse than them dying if I remember correctly.

Thanks. Perhaps I should look for different ways to feed my starving colony.

IMO, other birds suck.
the maturity age of turkey is 2+ compare to chicken's 0.3+.
Cassowary, ostrich and emu are no better.
you simply can't farm them on a large scale.
it's wiser to butcher baby turkey/ostrich as soon as it hatches.

But what about their fluffy little faces?!

It's not as though tamed animals are a test of your colony's
worth though. As such, it's more likely that taming is meant
to measure the environment's net worth. The world with high
radioactivity is worth more than a world with high toxicity.

I guess sometimes it's truly hard to harm fluffy little birds although kibbles are running dangerously low due to volcanic winter and toxic fallout.

so, what about building a heat/cold room, shut fledglings in and pretending they are not there suffering and dying?

Can I just say that elephants are crazy awesome.

They haul, they rescue, they are kick ass in a fight and they will happily wander around the map eating grass. Once they start having babies it's time to make it rain meat.

Everything burns.

Shurp

If you have grass on your map, yes, animals are an excellent way of turning it into meat.  Elephants are a giant way of accomplishing this.

But you will cry when toxic fallout kills your grass.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

Seems like a good compromise.  As long as the walls are thick enough to block out their adorable squeaks of despair.

remember them, but, ah, forget their fate...

Pigs and Boars are the best way of disposing of raiders.  They can haul and consume the dead bodies so your colonists don't get debuffs.  And turn raiders into usable meat and leather without any debuffs.
Don't pigs and Boars eat the entire body without leaving any skin or meat behind?

But on the bright side, you finally find a purpose for your 50,000 potatoes left in the freezer during last harvest.

So... Many... Chickens...
I mean... Never let your chickens go unsupervised for over a season. I have a lone rooster at the moment named "Chick 583"
Also the good news is I never have to hunt again.

Also animals being killed in raids is easily solvable. If you have a doctor who can't fight or something, assign all bonded animals to them and draft them. the animals will run right to them and stick closely. It's awesome to finally get ahold of a breeding pair of huskies. They sell for a decent amount and they make amazing haulers.

No rest for the staggeringly ugly and abrasive, I guess.

I want to set up a game at some point with the "lone colonist" starter, but give her like 15 tamed bears. See how well the raiders do against that. :)

Game of Thrones --- House Mormont scenario.
