Only a few pods made it off the stricken ship, no-one really had much idea of where the others went. Maybe others made it to this planet, Kurud Prior. Time would tell. Three people step from the wreckage.
To be continued.

Three females, aged 49-57 and a cat.

One of the survivors was in Navy fatigues, a woman, with a medical patch on her arm. This was Kimmy, a Doc on the ship they'd just escaped from.
"You guys OK?" asked Kimmy
"Yeah, I think so" replied a fairly lithe and would-be well dressed woman, had not her trousers been in shreds. She pulled them off to avoid tripping, and looked at her remaining item of clothing, a jacket. "Great", she muttered to herself. Her name was Brows.
The final survivor was also a woman, quite stocky, looks like she enjoyed a fight. She seemed in shock, but to Kimmy's practiced eye, looked otherwise OK. Her name, it turned out, was Mac.

"So, just the three of us then?" asked Brows.
"And a cat..." Kimmy pointed out. Sure enough, a small grey feline was cleaning itself off to one side of the pod debris. He seemed friendly enough, and quick look at his collar showed his name as Fernand.
"Well, if everyone's OK, we need to get a shelter together" Kimmy said. She had sort of assumed role as temporary leader, which the other two deferred to. Mac had come out of her shock.

"I think here will be good, we are surrounded by marsh to the North and East, good sight lines in case of hostiles. I am sure we'll be rescued soon, so let's just sort out food and shelter for now" observed Kimmy

12 hours later, after much toil, getting to know each other, and deciding they definitely wanted proper floors, they'd made good progress. Kimmy was the best shot, so she took the rifle they had found in the wreckage. Brows took the pistol, and she sure did like capping off those rounds. She hit every now and again, which was better than Mac, who had no idea how to use a gun. She could use a knife though.

They had beds and shelter. They'd be rescued soon, so they just had to wait, right?

Day 2
Fortunately, all their multitools were working fine, and they had an abundance of wood having crashed in a marshy forest. They slowly realised that rescue may not be all that close when an incredibly handsome stranger showed up. Kimmy noticed him at a distance, and brought up her rifle in a warning. He grinned as he got closer, holding his hands in the air, then stopped.
"I just want to trade" he shouted. Kimmy motioned him to come closer with the rifle, as Brows sighted in with her pistol.

The guy was quite something- toned and bronzed, with an easy air about him. He introduced himself as Valentin Anastasi, but wanted them to call him Val. Once it was clear he was (at least for now) friendly, they talked. He was curious about where they'd come from, and they explained. He nodded, and said he saw the shooting stars a few days ago- his tribe, Comboa Combarro. had been scared but he'd known better. Val seemed well informed, almost knowledgeable about spaceflight.

Val explained about the local factions they were likely to run into:

He spat when he said the names of the two pirate bands, they had killed many of his people. Val warned them not to trust the pirates and to be on their guard.

Kimmy, Brows and Mac thanked him for this information, and made a mental note to try and get in touch with the Outlander towns. They offered him a survival meal, which he really seemed to be amused by, and he bade them farewell.

Our three intrepid adventurers got on with building their electricity generators, and planting crops (just in case).

Day 3 & 4

Construction carried on unabated, with a lot of tree felling to generate the raw materials they needed. There was plenty of wildlife to hunt, but hunting meant corpses, and corpses tended to rot unless chilled, or cooked and then chilled. So, they needed a chiller. Then they hunt.

The wildlife came to them however, with a maddened racoon deciding he didn't like them invading his territory. Fortunately, his shrieking as he approached clued in the girls, and Kimmy, with that amazing shooting of hers, took out it's leg and heart in one shot.

It was going to be their first meal, as soon as they got the cooker up. Brows kept messing up the building of it (none of them were exactly great at construction, truth be told), but they'd get there eventually.

On the morning of Day 4, they were just finishing off the flooring when they heard "Hey? Hello!" from outside. Sounded like a man's voice. Kimmy stood up fast, a look of shock on her face. "Dez?" she gasped. She ran outside, and kept running.

Mac and Brows looked at each other, a puzzled look on their faces and followed her out. She was running toward a dark skinned man wearing only an armor vest. "What the hell?" muttered Brows, squinting to make out the form.

Kimmy jumped into his arms, and they embraced for a long time. Kimmy then led him back to Brows and Mac, and explained that this was Hernandez, or Dez as he liked to be known. His lack of clothing didn't seem to bother him (or Kimmy). Turns out he was on the ship also, was en route to another Rimworld to take up a Sheriff's position, but had fallen for Kimmy during the trip.

He was of a very artistic temperament (maybe this accounted for his lack of shame about nakedness), and a very good shot. It soon became clear he lived for hunting, and so he'd be out doing that most of the time. Yes, he would join them, and try to get off this rock. Maybe get some clothes too.

One man, three women- the group was diversifying and getting stronger. And it was just day 4.

Day 5- disaster strikes

Today was not a good day.

Dez was out hunting, when suddenly the Muffalo turn on him

He is a fast runner and shouts to Kimmy, Mac and Drews for help. They had only just started to research gun turrets, so they were on their own for defence. They had completed the cooker and butchers table, and were starting to be self sufficient.

Dez is faster than the lumbering Muffalo, and joins the line that the other colonists had formed. Guns and knives drawn, they start laying down a hail of lead. Muffalo are like bullet sponges, so they just...keep...coming. Two get felled, but then the Muffalo are on them. The knife is the only sharp weapon they have, and things look like they are going to be OK. One by one, they get trampled, headbutted and bitten and fall in shock.

One of the Muffalo even hunts down Fernand, who puts up a brave fight but gets trodden on...and sadly dies

As the stunned colonists lay there, the wiring they had just cobbled together in the kitchen goes BZZT and catches the wooden shack on fire..

Almost as if some Divine power was having a laugh at their expense, some traders choose that exact time to wander by....but they don't choose to help the colonists. They are from the tribals run by Val, but just ignore them and finish off the final Muffalo who thinks attacking them is a smart move.

It seems God really was having a chuckle, or maybe this was part of a plan- a chancer from one of the pirate bands called 'Hotsauce' thought he'd try his luck. He'd seen the roaring flames and come by- only to attack the visiting Tribals

....and get ended. Don't mess with the Tribals if you don't outnumber them....or have better tech!

Meanwhile, the fire had completely torn through their bone dry camp, and it was being gutted before their eyes (those that weren't unconscious). Maybe this was going to end badly. Once again, God, having decided he'd had his fun, sent some rain to put out the flames. One might say too little, too late.

The day wore on, the visitors left (they hadn't helped directly, but had seen off a Muffalo and raider), and the brave colonists now faced a further problem- as they lay there, they started to starve.

"...wake up...wake up...wake up...wake up" Kimmy stirred irritably, who was that shouting at her? Consciousness arrived back...oh God she hurt. She remembered the attack, and hurriedly looked around. Smouldering camp, collapsed friends. She was so very hungry. She dragged herself to her feet, grabbed Dez her lover and hauled him to a part of the camp that wasn't near rotting Muffalo or smoking. To her relief, she saw some of the meat from the racoon hadn't burned, and quickly ate some. She fed some to Dez, made sure he was OK, and did the same with Brows and Mac. There was also some Muffalo meat from an earlier kill- thank the stars for the hunting.

As soon as she'd attended to them, she collapsed.

No-one heard the escape pod roar overhead and crash into the swamp just north-west of the base. They were all asleep, and safe for now.

Despite best efforts, the fledgling colony spirals into mental breaks, starvation and psychotic episodes. Contact is lost soon after.

Rest in peace.

Simon_The_Space_Engineer

just the way it is on the rimworld. you start rooting for the colony for it to get thrown on its knees and face plant in the mud :D
In the end, we all make the same leather hats.

Barazen

How suddenly life is snuffed from the rim.... they certainly tried though!
Anyone else felt their heart break when a pawns marriage falls apart?
Doc & Valarie, I shipped it, she flipped it.

Never ever hunt large animals if you can help it early on. Once you have better guns it is safer to hunt them. I don't think a maddened one will trigger revenge if it is killed though.

This is like being in a remote fishing town in Libera and asking, "Why can't I just pay one of the fishermen $10 to take me back to Los Angeles?"

Fair comment, but if you're in a cold climate, you need to get leather to make parkas/jackets ASAP. Raiders don't come in numbers or have decent enough clothes until later. Also, meat.

MeowRailroad

Growing cotton is great for this - a 4 by 5 patch is good for having emergency cloth but you could make a larger 10 by 10 zone for parkas.
