How do i edit an XML file?

I'm sorry, i know this sounds like a stupid question, but how do i edit an XML file? I want to create my own mod, and i got as far as opening the XML file i wanted to modify on the internet, but i can't seem to be able to edit it. do i need to download something?
On the right path, but the wrong medication.

I like how there's a thing that displays how long you've logged in to the forums. It shows just how many hours you've spent here, never to get back...

Most likely your browser opened it, right? Try to open it with a texteditor. There you can edit and save it.
Notepad is enough, or you take Notepad++ which is free and has a nice collection of functions on bord :)

Right-click an XML file, click edit.

Thanks you guys! This fixed my problem.
