Playing 1st time and can't equip a weapon

I just started playing an I am at the part where it tells me to equip each colonist with a weapon. I select a colonist, I right-click on a weapon and from the drop-down menu I select the equip item. I do this for each colonist. But the bar that fills up showing my progress in completing the steps doesn't fill up. When I retry and right click on a weapon it shows that that weapon is reserved for whichever colonist I first tried to equip with that weapon (that part makes sense). But it seems that the colonists are not actually equipped with any weapons. What am I doing wrong?

wait for colonist to go to equipment and pick it up by himself.

did you unpause it? not trying to be a dick - it's 6am and that's all I got, lol.

Is the colonist puking ?

After the crash some have cryo-sleep sickness and are puking all over the place.
If the are, they are not able to move and equip stuff.
Also if they are not moving at all, you should unpause
