My current predicament is my decision to stop executing/rejecting useless colonists.  I didn't even pick the first three, just took whoever the RNG gave me.  Well, I now have five colonists.  My first one is frail, the second one has a shooting skill of 1, the third and fourth are trigger happy, and the fifth rejects violence altogether.

When pirates show up they hide behind a corner and then jump out with steel gladiuses and hack them to death.  I'm manufacturing some LMGs for this crew of losers to seriously spray ammo all over the place and see if they can hit something.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

Low on something (meds, food, etc). Crash pod with that specific resource, on far side of the map.

Scenario 1:
Unrestrict items. Colonists moving out of base to gather those needed resources. They arrive there, then raid in drop pods happens exactly in that specific area.

Wait for a while then unrestrict items. Colonists moving out of base to gather those needed resources. They arrive there, then raid in drop pods happens exactly in that specific area.

Also works with precious & degradable cargo: chocolate, glith meds, hyperweave, etc. Added bonus: by the time you fend off the raid and bandage your colonists, the cargo is degraded.
