Game not starting on OSX Sierra 10.12.1

Game installed via Steam, doesn't start. After launch:
- shows black screen
- goes "Application not responding"
- shuts down after a few minutes
Was fine in prior OSX version (10.11)

A bit of searching around revealed that this error appears to be an issue with Steam.
If you have access to the DRM-free version, I would suggest attempting to run that version of the game.
If not, then a few suggestions.

The basic:
Restart Steam.
No luck?
Shut down system (turn it off, not just a restart) and start it up again.
Still no luck?

The annoying:
You may need to reinstall Steam.
A few times this issue has come up with various games, it seems to be related to some Steam files becoming corrupted.
Unfortunately, "rechecking the cache" won't solve these issues.
Even more unfortunate, you may need to re-download any and all currently installed games after reinstalling Steam.

Full disclosure though, I don't run OSX, so it may be better to look around a bit more first.
