Leather penalty?

Since the great pod god in the sky dropped some ostrich leather on my colony, I decided to make ostrich leather parkas and jackets.  Then I discovered this:

Material (Ostrich leather): x50%

Well *that* is a waste.  My parka is as good as a jacket and my jacket is as good as a tuque.  What is going on here?  I searched the mod directories for something to explain this with no success.  Do all leathers make bad parkas/jackets or just ostrich leather?

If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

It depends on the type of leather. Not all are different, but there are certain groups. Generally, bird and reptile leather are bad for clothing. Sell it or use it for armchairs. The various deer like animals are are ok for clothing. Pig skin has 110% temperature insulation.

Rhinohide makes tougher clothing.

Lynxskin, chinchilla fur. warg fur, and snowhare leather are fairly good at insulating. Alpaca leather is good too but I assume you would want to keep them around for their wool.

Arctic wolfskin is particularly good at insulating.

Thrumbofur is good for tough and insulating clothing.

The rest are either comparable to or worse than cloth for insulating. Some are slightly more resistant to heat-based attacks (inferno cannon, molotovs).

Yeah, there is a difference between furs and leathers, though in game they are the same item group. Furs and/or skin from arctic animals is best for temperature insulation. I mentioned pig leather because it's a non-fur and not something you'd expect. Not because it's the best.

Yes, there's clearly a difference in the different leathers.  But where is this coded?  Is it hardcoded internally or is it in the mod files somewhere?  I see that pig leather has some stats in the mod files (value & heat armor) but I don't see the temp improvement there.

#5
It's in ThingDefs_Races - each animal either has a specific <leatherInsulation> tag or inherits one.

In the case of those which have a different modifier (e.g. armour against sharp/blunt damage) those will be in a leatherStatFactors tag.
