Like Dwarf Fortress. Not sure if its planned but I would love to see something where we get to view up and down the map. Perfect for building bunkers, underground basements, the works! Also perfect for building your own city complete with skyscrapers.

This is a dead horse topic - to even think about adding z-levels would require a near-entire re-write of the game.

Don't get me wrong, would be huge, but its a dead horse like said...and would require so much time, resources, and re-balancing, that its JUST not worth it this early...
Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.

Ok if thats the case then maybe he should fix how small the maps that run fine are because I usually build big bases that take the entire map so if he isnt going to add z levels (Towns did it, DF, gnomoria, etc etc) then he needs to make the maps more optimal and run wayyy better. Again, he should add z levels eventually and stop saying its too much work. What kid of response is that from him or his fans? Wtf?

Shame that it's a dead horse, even the wild west had two story buildings and cellars. Maybe someday...

Yes, it would require time, resources, and re-balancing. I'll even agree that it's JUST not worth it at this stage of development. However, there is a certain segment of the player base which would greatly appreciate such a move. (Personally, z-levels would be at the top of my wishlist.)

If this was seriously considered as a possible feature for later, then I think the dev would need to try to sort of plan around it. Right? It might impact things later on, like change the way certain other things are implemented.

Interestingly enough, early versions of Dwarf Fortress did not have z-levels. Per wikipedia:
QuoteA z-axis was introduced in the 2008 release because he felt the limitations with a single plane increasing...
QuoteIn the earlier version, players could dig only into a mountainside and not underground...

Honestly, claiming its a dead horse is not the attitude any fan or game developer should have at all. CodeRen has a point really. Games in the past showed exactly how it can be done. It did take time for Dwarf Fortress to include Z-axis yes. But the limitations a single plane map has is exactly the kind of problem Tynn will run into for the long haul.

I prefer to have an octagon based map (instead of squares) rather than z levels...

Edit: I meant octagons, not hexagons. Basically "squares" with added diagonal direction.

I do not have performance issues with maps, but I would definitely appreciate LARGER maps as-is.

I'm at about 10 colonists with my base right now, and I already feel like room on the map is getting scarce (while leaving a good buffer between the borders of the map so invaders don't just spawn at my doorstep) on the largest size. I'd love a 1000x1000 map option. Why not? Some of us have the hardware to easily handle it.

Thank you. This and pregnancy always get shot down even though Tynan has expressed interest in adding children/human birth. My bases are huge and the maps arent big enough. The ones that are, warn players they arnt optimized. Many games have done it. Hopefully Tynan does eventually. It can be a simple arrow click and panels between levels. Not simple to code but um talking about how it works in game.

Revisit that statement in late or ultralategame with 50+ colonists^^
