What is Rimworld about, really?

Drakortha

Crash landing on a planet, only to be attacked by random gangs armed with pistols, machine guns, grenades, and the occasional robot attack.

Who are these people? Who are these robots? Why are we fighting and what is the point of all this?

I think Rimworlds strongest point is gameplay but I feel like the theme/story is quite weak. I think the game could be improved in some of these other areas. Why not introduce a new factions, enemies, strongholds, and generally just things to further flesh out this new  world and lore? Giving the game more sense would go a long way.

A Friend

Gameplay features first m8. I'm sure events, enemy variety, different races, cactus people, more ending conditions and better faction interactions will get added sometime in the future.
"For you, the day Randy graced your colony with a game-ending raid was the most memorable part of your game. But for Cassandra, it was Tuesday"

This is Alpha, therefore not the time to focus on the mentioned subject, in my opinion.

The game slightly tells you what is hapenning, before the game creation, and with the tutorial, saying that you've been there a while, and thiefs started to notice you.

You do have a point with factions, absolutely no logic start with friendly/enemy factions, you don't even know them, but to overcome this, some diplomatic gampleya would have to be added, and that's just not the focus right now, I believe.

Thyme

RimWorld is about eating your enemies when you're low on food.

It's a story about girl meets boy
But's not like any story
In this story you will find out that not everything goes right,
In this story there will be people that lose their minds in the middle of their job
You will see that some people in the world want to screw you over
And that some people just want to see the world burn
But girl meets boy and they try their best to be happy
They create a small self sustaining house,
They raise puppies and train them,
They sleep together in a beutiful dorm with marble floor and a royal bed.
They eat breakfast together everyday.
Boy always loves the girl food.
Boy loves girl.
But one day boy goes into the freezer to grab a snack
Boy finds out where the meat comes from
Boy lose his mind and try to attack girl
Girl is faster on the trigger, and boy lays down.
Girls is alone now, and winter approches.
Yes... This is a story of love that goes beyond reason.
This is a story of girl eats boy.

I will never do worse than what I do now.
It's what self-improvement means.

The "story" isn't for the game to decide. If you read the description on the web page, the story is what happens when you play. Tynan has made it pretty clear that he's not trying to tell a story with the game, but provide a game that lets you tell your own stories. The theme is pretty strongly defined already, tho'; Stories of hardship, loss, triumph against adversity, relationships, both good and bad, and trying to not only survive but thrive on a world that doesn't want you there, and will make life increasingly difficult until you leave, or die.

There are a lot of things I'd like to see fixed, but the story generation is working pretty well. You just have to invest in your colony, and write your own story.

RimWorld is a game about survival. The exact details don't matter, just whether it feels like you're scraping out a living on a hostile ball of rock.

DariusWolf got it on point. Whether you are a colony of cannibals, only females, a place that provides shelter for every lost soul (beware of dumb labor unions), reenacting Dwarf Fortress, a fortress of capitalism or whatever you like. It's up to you which story you tell.

Note: How the story ends is another thing. Some end glorious, most in a tragic way.

It's about taking brain-damaged slaves and turning them into cybernetic melee killing machines enhanced with alien technology.

And then getting in a spaceship and blasting off to do it again.
