Deep drilling: Steel, my kingdom for some Steel?!

I'm entering the late game, and to be honest this play though has not been the kindest. However its just slapped me with a new low.
In previous Alphas, when deep drilling, the game swamped me with steel. Which was fine because I had requirements for 1x metric ass ton of steel for component and artillery shell manufacture.
In this play though I've tapped five large scanner hits (I do like the much bolder colour though). So far of the five three have been Chemfuel and two plasteel.

This seems broken to me. I can turn wood into Chemfuel, so I really don't need it in the ground taking away valuable steel from my colony. Chemfuel comes from a refinery or deep drilling, steel comes from... not a lot (at least in large quantities), now that one of the main late game sources has been deleted.
To add to this, I'm using up my precious steel supplies to find out that there's none down there.

The component thing was a real pain in the butt, especially for large long term settlements. This isn't making me feel any better.

I'm using a mod that reduces the cost of components myself, but resource gathering colonies are the way to go if you need wood, meat, steel etc.

I found plenty of steel in my latest colony but it really doesn't matter as steel is finite but the component upkeep is constant. This means that you can no longer have a self sustained advanced colony. You're gonna need steel for breakdowns and steel is going to run out for certain. I don't like that I am forced to trade / caravan.

Deep Core Drilling and Vegetable Garden Mods are balanced solutions (trading lots of power for infinite steel vs trading lots of time and the possible need for a greenhouse for infinite steel). You could also use the mods that let you smelt metal from stone and lower component cost. However, those make the resource game dramatically easier while the former are more late game solutions.

Alpha 16, meanwhile, has made this much easier with the ability to create mining colonies. Of course, then you have the problem of multiple colonies which I'm not sure the game currently supports due to memory issues. So really, you're better off doing mining expeditions rather than mining colonies.  :P

Use your comms console to call every faction and ask for a bulk goods trader. Steel is infinite and readily available.

Not to be confused with the smaller Imperial or English ass ton.

My problem is Uranium. I have been almost ready to leave the planet for months now. I just can't get hold of that Uranium to build the last part of my ship. I've had 5 exotic traders come by, none of them had Uranium.

Mining colony is a solution to your problem

That or, you can make something else like drugs, clothes, hell, even just food in general, then call in a trader, you've got to spend money to make money, sell your product and buy what you need. It's a fun process. I produce yayo in bulk every season so I can buy what I need for my colony. No point in hording up everything.

I sell flake to buy steel/components. I usually call 2 bulk traders every 3-5 days to sell my flake and buy their steel. I have never been able to run a colony without interaction from the outside world. And I think that is a good thing. In reality- if you mine all your steel (iron) then you don't have any more steel (iron). Better get something to trade for it.

Beer is better to sell for the work involved. Slightly more costly to set up though that's for sure. ;D

I enjoy setting up breweries, but my inner drug lord likes having piles of cocaine to sell. :P

Is it bad if I have never even once built a brewing station? lol.

Yes! Setting up a brewery is awesome, you can make a great design with the casks and experiment with how the chain works more than any other production type.
