[WIP] MusicJoy: Musical Instruments and Playback Devices

I'm starting work on a new mod that will allow the playing of music in zones like a TV does.  I am starting with Industrialization and Working towards Spacer.  I might even do Medieval music via lutes & bards etc.

Anyway, I wonder if anyone is interested in sending me royalty free music that is Rimworld-based (western songs about Muffalo, for example) that i can incorporate into the mod.  Musical samples should be about 30 seconds long, I think.  Hopefully I will be able to have enough so when you zoom in on the play-to area you can actually find it fun to hear.  I'm NOT trying to overwrite the soundtrack.

Thoughts?  Comments?

Due to lack of enthusiasm for my old title of "Stereo Furniture" I'm reworking this post. I've made a fair bit of progress and could use some programming advice or at least a code auditor to help me clean it up and/or find bugs before they rear their heads.  C# has been fun thus far, and not too unfamiliar, and of course the XML is a breeze.  I also found a wealth of music in the form of royalty-free MIDI scores, which I can play and record on my own gear.  If anyone is interested in contributing to this project, I'm on github (https://github.com/gustable/MusicJoy), and on Discord.

@Zhentar made the music detours, but I'd prefer to just play chiptues (low sample rate snippets) for now as sounds, so that's what I'll be working on for a while.

Please, any ideas or comments are truly appreciated...

Saw an old post about instruments on reddit a time ago, absolutely loved the concept, you've got my support. Sadly all that's worth is play testing since I can't do nada. But good luck anyways!

Fantastic idea, the complete absence of music as a source of enjoyment/skill within the game has always irked me!

MusicJoy Works!


Description:
A RimWorld Mod that provides players with a variety of musical instruments and music playback devices from drums and phonographs to SubSpace Radio.

Sub Topic
v0.3 Now includes Neolithic to Industrilisation instruments and the phonograph, as well as basic sounds.  All sounds are royalty free MIDI files played through Windows Media Player, and recorded in OGG format. The instruments only provide joy to those playing them at the moment.  Further improvements should be forthcoming.

How to install:
- Unzip the contents and place them in your RimWorld/Mods folder.

Ok, people listen up...i gots a hard one for you.  I've got a pawn carrying a lute.  She wants to play it, but can't access the billsTab to select a song.  Ideas?

A good solution to this would allow a grenade launcher underneath a gun, with selectable one-shot grenades.

Ok, MusicJoy has made it back to the front burner again, and after a few failed attempts, my C# is improving.  What I really need is a C# buddy.  Big Ups and Thanks to @source for the textures, and as is the instruments only give joy to those that play them.  However, there is a LOT of coding to do, mostly repetitive once I figure it out.   

Alpha Version four will hopefully have group listening and you can play for your pawns while they work.

Also, still looking for samples and ideas.

MusicJoy is a fantastic idea... keep up the good work!

I recommend maybe reviewing some of the music themed mods for Terraria or Starbound. The implementation is approximately the same for what you're working on here: instruments that use instrument appropriate midi files. For many of the "free" classical works, their are midi files for each instrument in a given work, and in theory if they were all synchronized/started at the same time, it would end up being the entire musical (symphony?)

In the short term, you might focus on solo tunes and individual instruments though.
