Racism and Prejudice

Just hear me out for a moment. I feel like some Colonists should be slightly RACIST or have Prejudice.
For example.
One colonist might have tons of prejudice towards a recruited pirate or hostile tribalist since their faction killed his wife.
One colonist might just hate black people.
It adds a new layer of story-telling to the game

I think the world is mixed up and cosmopolitan enough that discriminating based on race would be largely irrelevant.  Tribal vs. Civilized maybe, but there are a non-trivial number of tribesmen who have their origins on other planets.

Tribal instincts are very deeply rooted. Once upon a time a farmer had problems with baboons ruining his field. He caught the boldest baboon, and painted its fur white. Then he released it. Baboons ran away and scattered upon seeing the white baboon. A few days later the baboon was found dead. He died by baboon teeth.

Modern behavioral research shows that it's enough to divide people into two groups to make them dislike each other. We, humans, have a natural tendency to band together and fight other tribes. Add religion into the mix and people being raised to hate some minorities, and things spiral out of control, especially in times of hardship when a scapegoat is convenient.

Interestingly enough, the Racism and Prejudice feature could be used for better storytelling.
For example
"The nation of Luxembourg prepared it's soldiers for a crusade, a crusade against the heathens of Hacker's Mesa." "They were a vermin that needed to be extinguished as seen by the Luxembourgian."

I do wonder if this will also include subtle differences in the races, nothing huge, just little difference in strength, intellect, habits, emotions, ect... Partially instilled by the culture alone, but some of the physical aspects dictated slightly by race

....this thread makes me crave diverse body types too, frankly... diverse body types and sexual dimorphic bodies and minds too.

.... but, too many people would get offended by it, and fits would be thrown over it, despite it hurting nobody...oh well.

By the way, it doesn't need to be exclusively looking different. Look at the tootsie genocide in africa, they didn't look very different, but were rounded up and killed.

But is this racist?... I mean, they are black people...hard to say if they can be [/sarcasm]

On the topic of religion though, it would be.. ..interesing having that, but thats another factor...religions who are nice and polite, trying to convert through charity and caring, others who convert through straight brutality, and others who try to subvert and control others outside their faith to do their bidding, while claiming to be victims

We already have something like this in the form of "dislikes men/women", right? IMO 'real' racism would be a huge can of worms, far more than it would be worth.

Amen, I doubt you can go into racism proper without going into tribal attitudes, genetic differences, warfare, rape, ect... And nobody wants to go into those, I've tried suggesting them before

If RockPaperShotgun and other such gutterpress "games journalism" websites haven't gotten triggered at the fact that there are misogynists in RimWorld then I doubt they're going to care if a 'Racist/Xenophobic' trait is added. And who cares if they do? What are they going to headline it as, "Bad people exist in a videogame"? Whoopdeedo. Then we'll have another idiotic hit piece to laugh at.

Not seeing the downside here.

Yeah, probably messing with racism can get a lot of angry people for no rational reason. Something that Tynan may want to avoid. But prejudice can work on the game, based on other factions, outsider pawns, new recruits or new joined pawns, lower/higher technological civs, etc.
After all, the game already have a primitive "prejudice system" based on traits.
