What do you think about stealth?

I know you can kind of stealth raid bases and ambush raiders but im asking for your opinion on a full on stealth system in Rimworld.

This system would have components like "Noise made" based on the equipment a pawn is wearing and maybe a new skill and even traits, "Ambient sound" (if its raining you can be a bit loud but still be stealthing around), specialized equipment and maybe even fog of war.

An event when enemy "agents" infiltrate your base unnoticed would be cool :D Noise traps, motion detectors and stuff could be build to avoid it.

First you would have to create a system that gets around the "Total Information Awareness" that the player has about every plant animal and stone on the map.

Final straw was: Overdue projects.

Total information awareness like how you immediately know when a non-manhunter predator that is hungry begins to stalk your colonist?

How about a new type of raid: small (25%-50% of what would otherwise spawn as a raid), doesn't give you an alert, and the raid just tries to sneak in and steal some stuff. If they're spotted by a pawn, they attack the person who spots them and stage a fighting retreat. Might require some AI work so they will attempt to avoid detection and how the AI "spots" them, but would be an interesting change to raid dynamics.

Technically you had the ability to observe the predator the entire time, but I've lost colonists twice to a hungry fox, so yeah.  You're usually busy with stuff like "running the colony" and you'd expect that arming them with a shotgun would offer at least some level of self defense.

But given that, I think that an "Unannounced Raid" would be a pretty good proxy for a stealth attack.  Suddenly your base is on fire and colonists are getting shot at.  When did this happen?!!!!

I think it can work but only in a limited perspective that is in favour of the player.

They'd have to introduce a system whereby the direction a pawn is facing is the LOS they have. Think a system that is like a mix of Metal Gear Solid and Commandos or Shadow Tactics. And it would work mainly if you form a caravan to go raiding. You can sneak by and probably steal stuff and get out before they notice. Also, if stealth is introduced, there needs to be a mechanic to one-shot enemies to prevent alerts.

You could try this mod for starters, https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=836245605

If you combine that with not clicking on raid events to see where they are coming from and who it is raids can be quite nerve wrecking.

There was a design decision early in development to remove all kinds of fog of war. This means discussing any kind of stealth is pointless unless you mean on the world map, which hasn't been castrated yet.

Well there goes that.

My Neighbour upstairs needs to increase his stealth skill ..
Maxim 1   : Pillage, then burn
Maxim 37 : There is no overkill. There is only open fire and reload.
Rule 34 of Rimworld :There is a mod for that.
