Best mix of weapons for bunker defense?

I have a bunker set up like this

x=wall s=Sand bag o=open space

o w
o s
o w
o s
o w
o s
o w

I was wondering if there was a good mix of weapons to use other than Assault rifles + Charge rifles.

Miniguns have a good reputation for close-in support. Just make sure no friendlies are near your target(s). They also have a reputation for hitting anyone close to the target.

Assault Rifles and Charge Rifles work great.  Your only danger is from weapons that can outrange the Assault Rifles, but there are only a handful of those (survival rifle, sniper rifle).

You can actually also do double-wide wall sections and have colonists lean from each side of the openings in the walls.

Well, if you have walls set up to force enemies into a certain range, then assaults + a few charge rifles for guys that get too close is basically ideal.  For late game mobs, miniguns aimed at the far wall
and charge rifle is better.

Personally, I would also have a straight line of sandbags that's closer to range limiter, so if you have to fight scythers, you can just go full charge rifle.  Range gets you nothing since they're godly snipers.

I should note you should punctuate your crenelations with 3-wide walls. This gives wounded pawns, melee pawns who don't have shields, pacifist pawns waiting to rescue/repair, and pawns with emergency rocket launchers a place to hide. This is especially important against mechanoids.

Wide wall segments with fewer openings reduces the likelyhood of Inferno-Centipedes wrecking your defensive line.

I've found fighting large amounts of inferno cannon is just suicide anyways, so that's one case where I consider cheese necessary rather than traditional firezones.

Personal shields keep pawns safe from the initial splash of flame!  (But not if it walks INTO fire)

Wait.. really? :O  That sounds really annoying to micro though since they block shooting.

Edit: Oh I see, decoys xD  Kinda falls into cheese, so it's pick your cheese ;)

Keeps your cheese from getting melted.  ;)

A word of warning: although it will save your pawn from the flame-splash, a direct hit from the projectile can do enough damage to take down a weakened shield (the shell is still blocked, but the flame protection is lost).

:D  Also, regarding defense setup, I've also found this useful for open maps:

O = open
W = wall
S = sandbag

SSSSSS
OOOOO
SSSSSS
OWOWO
SOSOS
OSOSO

Basically, your guys sit behind the W, with sandbags adjacent to them. Shielded melees pop into the open line behind the sandbags in front for emergencies.  Useful for mass tribal waves that overwhelm your front lines or sneak around

The Man with No Name

I was using square towers with one sandbag wide openings. In my first raid, however, the attackers approached from the corner direction and I couldn't shoot at them at all because the angle wasn't right. So then I switched to two sandbag wide openings which offered greater arcs of fire.

I've gone through half a dozen different tower designs now and am still experimenting.

You also have to make sure you space out your firing positions enough so that you aren't bitten by the scatter rolls.

Missed bullets are better aimed then hits. I.e: if you aim at something behind a pawn you are more likely to hit the pawn then if you aimed at the the pawn it's self.

This means that of your firing positions are to close, when a shot misses and scatters, it stands a solid chance of getting scattered into another firing position.

I also think it's possible to hit the tile of the pawn you aimed at is standing in and miss (i.e: hit the ground at his feet), but a scattered shot will ALWAYS hit the pawn in any tile it scatters into.

"Guard Tower" design I've been fiddling with:

. = = # = = .
= # . . . # =
= . . . . . =
# . . . . . #
= . . . . . =
= # . . . # =
. = = # = = .

Great all-round coverage, but lacks thick hard cover.
