As topic says: does standing water freeze in temperatures below 0°c?

I usually play in boreal forest biomes, and in the past I thought I remembered shallow and deep water freezing over (apparent by snow collecting on top). You can see this happening with marshy soil.

I noticed my past few playthroughs this was not the case. The water stayed open in winter at -30°c temperatures. I don't know if I remember incorrectly or if a mod is potentially causing issues.
The only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down.

I don't think so. I was thinking a couple of days ago that this could be added to the game now rivers are a part of it, to prevent rivers being used as impassable defensive barriers.

Ice terrain never melts and water terrain never freezes.  Any terrain that is "land" will accumulate snow in winter.  A marsh will get covered in snow, but never becomes icy.
