names shane in truth and jerry is my online name and dnd character and currently in highschool so not much to do but build my colony harvest organs and download mods to make androids to do my work for me

what introduced me to rimworld is random chance to be honest I just liked how free and open you've made the game so props to you

my favorite game is an impossible choice since ive played many games of all genres but survival/building games has always been a fav genre for me

-most embarrassing story- well once I had a colony where I had my original survivors I called them the stonebloods and our great tomb was 3 times bigger then the damn city I had built in the mountain and one day I misclicked who to attack ... that unfortunate misclick led to the death of one the cats that had been with the colony since day one soon after the cat who bred with it developed dementia and I had to put it down those cats were the first to be laid in the great tomb of the stonebloods

Serina

Hi there!
I'm not new to RimWorld, started playing back in November of last year when B18 was first released, but I'm new to the forums so I thought I'd post and say hi.

I created this account mainly for the purpose of posting bugs I may find during gameplay of unstable 1.0.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
My bf actually introduced me to RimWorld. At first glance, it didn't seem like my type of game due to the graphics. I know, I judged way too quickly. Once I started playing, I couldn't stop. I went through colony loss after another because I enjoy digital suffering and dove straight into the game using rough storytellers (permadeath) without having a clue on what I was doing. Although often frustrating, I have thoroughly enjoyed every second of my time playing RimWorld.

-What's your favorite other game?
I don't have a favorite game but I do have preferences in genre. I transitioned from mmos to survival crafting to colony simulation games.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
I thought my colonist could handle a couple of innocent looking Ibex. I have never been so wrong in my history of gaming and immediately regretted my decision. The more embarrassing part was that I didn't learn my lesson the first time and repeated history in a new save. I've had more colonists become incapacitated by Ibex/Muffalo herds going manhunter on me than raids in my first few saves. I told my bf Ibex are op, but he didn't believe me until it happened to him.  ;D

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
I don't really like cereal. I'm a horrible person.  :-\

einie

Einie here,
I have been an avid gamer since the 70's. (Yes the 1970's - I am old - get over it - I have).  I have also been in software development since about the same time, mainly as a DB designer and software performance guy when not doing management of some sort or another.  I tend toward the strategy and resource management  games, but am not above a got FPS (too bad there hasn't been a good one since the original Unreal tournament which they totally screwed up wiht vehicles and zero gravity - but I digress.)  Ran into a Rim World post  on the Reddit front page one day and it caught my attention.  500 or so hours later I am still playing and enjoying the heck out of it.

BTW - I tend to keep a low profile in forums etc.  There is a reason I have spent most of my life dealing with machines over people.  Code has never required "relationship maintenance".

Adsixnine

hi everyone
nice to meet u.  ;D

gwtheyrn

Hey, I'm Gwtheyrn, a papermaker haling from the United States and the great state of Washington. No, not THAT Washington. The good one over on the West coast.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid (my first system was the Collecovision back in the 80s) and lately in my adult life, I find that I prefer slower, more chill games than action packed twitch-fests. I've been down with Battletech and My Summer Car a lot lately, but the game I keep coming back to over and over again is Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

I found Rimworld simply because it popped up in my queue on Steam and the funny stories people were sharing in the reviews sold me.

MerlinEngine

#785
Hello, for the purposes of this forum, I will go by the name of MerlinEngine. I am a denizen of that wondrous land of peace and sunshine collectively known as the Middle East. I am at the moment comfortably nestled in my Galilean mountain retreat in a relatively safe distance away from Jerusalem's trinity of horrors; violence, zealots, and politicians. That's all you are going to hear about regional politics from me, as I find conversations about the subject dull and repetitive. Hopefully, what I said in jest won't be tagged for violating some sort of community rules.

If I had to describe myself, I would say I am perhaps a remnant of the British Empire. I am certainly a citizen of the UK, I follow the movements of the royal family for reasons that seem good to me and tend to see the Queen as my Head of State rather then my own president, but I never really lived there, so I am perhaps more impressed with my perception of what I think Britain represents then what it is in reality. Don't get me wrong, I am an Israeli patriot (eh, the country-lovin' thing, not the missile), I quite like my country when it isn't being silly and I like many silly things when they aren't related to my country. I am technically Egyptian-German Jewish and English-Italian Catholic... if that makes any sense. It sort of came together in the Marxist Kibbutz system of collective socialist communes in the north of the country. Spiritually and intellectually I identify with classical Greek philosophy, primarily with Plato and the Stoics.

I have been playing Rimworld for about a year, and expect to continue for some time. I do not recall what introduced me to the game, but I think I was probably directed to it in the steam store according to my past preferences. I spent my childhood playing village building games like Cultures, The Settlers, and to a lesser extent Age of Empires, so Rimworld very easily captured a hell of a lot of nostalgia points. I have been into gaming since I was about eight, but I have been steadily reducing the total time I put into games in recent years. Rimworld is actually a fairly ideal game in that regard, as I enjoy playing it, in short, one-hour sessions every now and then, keeping it pretty much endlessly replayable. I used to play RPG's, such as Morrowind and its less spectacular successors, but I prefer strategy games. I enjoyed games such as RUSE, Darkest Hour and Victoria 2, but I expect I will prefer to support smaller indie developers in the future.

If I had to put forward three favorite games, I would say that Knights of the Old Republic 2 was my favorite RPG, Victoria 2 my preferred strategy game, and Rimworld as my current game of choice. My most embarrassing game related story goes back to Sims 1 when I was young, barely literate and thought that the in-game firework launcher was actually a casino roulette. All the adults of the family died in the ensuing house fire, leaving the children to fend for themselves on pizza and cereal until the social services took them away.

Quaker Oats are easily the best!

5thHorseman

Hey everybody 5th Horseman here. I play a lot of games on YouTube but have never played Rimworld. Maybe when 1.0 is a little more stable but probably not as it's a hard game to pace in a series, at least from what I've watched.

While I've never played Rimworld on YouTube, I have played it a lot and love it. I'm casual to hardcore, preferring easier Phoebe runs to naked-in-the-snow-hardcore type stuff. I don't like the idea of killboxes but if a friendly guy from another faction takes a manhunting warg to the face I'll happily keep his stuff after patching him up and sending him on his way.

I never got how pawns in the game could have such insanely bad reactions to such mundane things.
Then I came to the forums.

Jon from Oregon in the US! Soccer, Zoology, Games, Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica!
I started in on this charmer back at the release of B18!

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
I have always liked strategy games, and have a broad taste in games in general. I started with Descent, Baldurs gate, C&C Red Alert 2, Age of Empires, and The Neverhood in the late 90's. I recently got more into the colony management games pretty heavily with Dwarf Fortress, Judgement apocalypse survival sim colony management demon hunting RPG game, and Oxygen Not Included about a year ago, though several RTS are similar to a degree. A friend recommended RW, and it's now my favorite colony management by far now, and my top 5 favorite games as well!

I have always yearned for a video game that matches pen and paper D&D in terms of ultimate freedom, and we are getting closer! I think DF still holds that spot, Though RW is far more fun IMO, with deceptively deep, satisfying, and innovative combat, and far more QoL additions than DF(Taming being at the forefront!), among other things.

-What's your favorite other game?
Probably still Baldurs gate, I haven't tried Dues Ex, but i think Baldurs gate hasn't been matched in terms of world development and story. Pillars of Eternity is pretty close in trying to re imagine the game! Divinity Original Sin 2 may be the best combat wise of that genre that i have seen. My list of "favorites" is very long though.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
I shall have to think on that!

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
I rarely eat cereal these days, but when I do I Frosted mini-wheats! Though Honey Nut Cheerios and Raisin Nut Bran are close.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?

I stumbled across Rimworld back in 2014. I thought it was absolutely amazing even back then, so I sent a message to Tynan to kind of show my love. When I actually received a response I was very surprised. I still have that reply laying around as a reminder. I just love the freedom that Rimworld provides, every single session is different from the last. Bonding with your characters, watching them progress or perish.

The real battle beginning when the enemy are all dead and gone, left with your own resources to try and stop bleedings, infections and prevent a mental breakdown.  :o

-What's your favorite other game?

Like many others, this is not as easy of a question. At this time however, it would probaply be Steel Division or Stellaris. Huge Paradox nerd.  8)

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?

I am a super human who never embarrasses himself! (dont ask anyone I know)  :D

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?

I dont eat cereal, I am usually content with some rye bread and eggs.  :)

Namsan

Hello, I'm Namsan. I'm learning English.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
I bought Rimworld in 2016, because my friend told me like "You can harvest organs from people, or force people to eat human meat in this game! I think Nam would like this game!"
He was absolutely right.

-What's your favorite other game?
Doom, Terraria, stupidly violent games, and some roguelike games.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
I can't remember well, but I hope I didn't produce it in recent days...

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
Cereals with berries.
Hello

Robc

-Basics of me
Civil Engineer, Game Developer (hobbyist for 20? years or so), did previously work full-time on games for 4 years under my own banner, thatbrewerygame.com and thatpmgame.com are my most successful games and still online.   See rcharney.com for more about me.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
Can't remember when I first came across RW, seems a long time ago though, love it, was a dwarf fortress player prior, just started reading "Designing Games"  nice work.

-What's your favorite other game?
Decline to state... lol, only because my favorite changes too often and is highly mood dependent.  I am firmly entrenched in strategy and management game genres, need a rare but occasional FPS fix, have similar occasional fix requirements in other genres as well, did many MMOs for awhile but have since lost interest, played many of the earliest games to ever appear on computers and the web...  read "old timer"

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
I dunno, wearing a red cloak around for a day at E3 15 years or so ago to try and get a beta slot for one of the "new" superhero MMOs (can't remember which one)?

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
Probably oatmeal, though I am an eggs for breakfast guy at the moment.  One of the first websites I ever created was gamerchow.com, An attempt to answer the age old question about what are the best foods to eat while playing video games?  The web page is seriously dated now, and I don't really do anything with it but continue to host it for nostalgia only.  Check it out for a laugh.

Welcome to the forums.

nice to meet u.

KalkiKrosah

My username is KalkiKrosah. I've had this username for about almost a decade now. My name is the combination of two song titles by E.S. Posthumous: Kalki & Krosah. I found out later that Kalki is the 10th incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu and the incarnation who ends the world only to usher in a new era. While Krosah, which translates from Sanskrit, to mean "the distance within which a man's shout can be heard." I'm not Hindu, I just liked the way the words sounded together.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
It kept showing up on my recommended list for Steam. Nobody I knew was playing it and the strategy tag peaked my interest. Most of the other games I own are either strategy or RPG. The base building part

-What's your favorite other game?
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (vanilla). I can't even remember how many hours I spent playing and replaying this game. The world building is great and I am especially fond of the Aurora effect they made in the sky as well as some of the music tracks in the game.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
The most recent one I can recall is when I got a notification about a man hunter pack of gazelles. Decided I would wait this one out instead of fight it off. Conscripted all my colonists outside the wall to run back inside only to realize later that one of the doors was set to "stay open" and the man hunter pack got inside the wall through the open door. And then in fighting them off realized that one of my colonists still had a molotov equipped that I forgot to swap out from an earlier raid. They were trigger happy too...

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
Lately I've been fond of Raisin Bran with apple clusters in it. But frosted mini wheats is my go to want something less fruity.

Anniebenlen

Hi everyone, I'm Annie.  I've been posting a bit on the forums, and I realized I've never hit this thread.  So here it goes!

I'm a 54 year old woman with a husband and 7 cats.  I've literally been playing pc games since the days when they used cassette tape storage (our computer would reboot every time the fridge condenser kicked in.  Good times).  All of this doesn't mean I am particularly good or anything, I break towards just goofing around and not dealing with min/maxing.

Games I've sank way to many hours in, in no particual order:

  • Bard's Tale and other rpgs when they were in the golden age of the Commodore 64
  • Civs 1-6.  Not a big fan of I think it was 4?  But overall, yeah, Civ.
  • The Sims Series.  Fond Memories, but EA destroyed it and now on boycott status for me
  • Everquest/WoW/City of Heroes
  • Tropico.  First was great, the series is decent now but too much a dlc cash grab.  No official on boycott status, but I'm not really bothering anymore either.
  • Stardew Valley
  • Don't Starve
  • Lately a odd little story generation management game I can remember the name of

As far as Tynan's suggestions:

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
Rimworld I found from recommendations from the Don't Starve Community.  I truly love DS, but I was getting a bit bored with it.  Others in the same position said they liked Rimworld too, so I gave it a go.  Fell in love in first playthrough when a mad squirrel destroyed my life.  Oh, you shouldn't ignore those like I do in real life?  Wow!

-What's your favorite other game?
Seriously, Don't Starve is awesome.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
I was playing a gnome in Wow and running around sand dunes hunting small things, don't remember the details.  What I do remember is that I suddenly came upon a giant something or other.  Spider maybe?  Details.  What I do remember is that I was startled in real life.  And I screamed, in real life.  And my real life husband and our room mate at the time were at their computers playing their games.  I startled them in real life.  They laughed at me for months, and rightly so.

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
Cinnamon raison bagels slathered with butter.  Yes, that counts and cereal.
