How about making factions regional?

It doesnt make much sense, that faction bases are all around the planet. Especially when they tend to be hostile to each other. It would make more sense for every faction to be located in some area, so you could for example have 5 tribes, each being located in different part of the world. It could make factions more versatile. For example if you started a colony deep in one tribes territorry, angering that one tribe might have severe consequences, but angering other tribes, that are far away would not be such a problem. Ofcourse this would need some rework on raids, as far away factions would raid you less then the one you landed in.

You know, sort of like countries.

To expand on this, I'd hide factions from the faction menu until you've "discovered" them (i.e. built in their region, sent a caravan within X distance of one of their camps, maybe a random chance of them raiding you before you've discovered them, which would add them to your faction menu as well)

That way, you really don't know who's who and how they're going to feel about you until you're there. You can choose your original crash site (or whatever) based on detected settlements, but you won't know their names or faction relations until you're on the ground. Maybe tribal start would be a bit different in this, possibly something closer to current functionality.

If you consider the effort to survive with only one colony, think of what it would take to have a planet spanning empire which the factions essentially are, even the most underdeveloped apocalyptic survivors.
