Animals Starving surrounded by grass .. ?

Some thing I never actually cared for where Animals in Winter ..
it is a measly -5° C outside and grass is still everywhere.
Only my pets walk around with malnutrition ?
Why is grass suddenly not good enough ?

They WILL, however, eat frozen harvested haygrass (not while still in the ground though) .  Personally, I combine my haygrass storage with my main animal shelter; it has AC to prevent heat deaths and provide refrigeration, but no heater (my biome is pretty warm, although I do get cold snaps):

Haygrass stores a LONG time, even unrefrigerated/unfrozen.

and they startet eating again the next day, even with temperatues below zero

Is there snow on top of the grass and have you cleared the snow?
