I came across this tutorial/tip and wanted to share. http://imgur.com/a/xdDzg
I hope to see more tutorials from the community about making rimworld style sprites. Stuff like Weapons, Items etc. Seriously helps with people like me who sucks at this.

Shinzy

where did you come across this? (just out of curiosity)

@ Shinzy - Mr Googley Searchy gives this reddit thread as the possible source.

Edit - There's a user on this forum by the same name, Ekksu, https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=70040 . Post history seems to suggest it's probably the same person.

Hey that's pretty cool. Nice for us who want to get into modding and are starting at the really basic level. Thanks for sharing!

Jibbles

I came across it when I was doing some googling tutorials for rimworld sprites. Don't remember if it led me straight to imgur or reddit.

I hope others find it useful.  Though it would be nice to see more of these. Thought about reaching out to other talented people on these forums to see if they would be comfortable with sharing their methods.

I've must've created about 15 different versions of this fire extinguisher. Spending way too much time on it. So it bums me out that it turns out like this...

But it doesn't look too bad in normal view.
It's just evident that I'm using bad techniques. I'm not sure what causes black splotches on the extinguisher, or why the red bleeds into black when I don't see this happening inside gimp zoomed.  Maybe I use the wrong tools, or wrong export method. :(  Anyways, more knowledge on this subject is always welcomed.

I think you need thicker black lines. But that is just me ;p

A Friend

Extra thicc outlines are necessary to make things look as vanilla like as possible, even if the texture isn't as detailed, it'll be okay as long as the outline is there.

Also some tips regarding weapon and item textures.
QuoteTextures doesn't necessarily need to be made in pixel sprites. Vectors can work just as well if not better. A single tile in game is 64x64, so people usually work in that area. But you can work on larger image sizes like 128x128 and the scale will be adjusted in game.

Here is a flamethrower that I made for example. I made it on a 320x320 canvas and just downscaled it later into 64x64 (I believe it's optional as you can adjust it through xml).

and general stuff
QuotePutting a 1% transparency black fill layer under your texture will prevent the white pixel artifacts appearing around your texture in game. The black fill is not visible in game.
"For you, the day Randy graced your colony with a game-ending raid was the most memorable part of your game. But for Cassandra, it was Tuesday"

Squiggly lines you call drawings aka "My Deviantart page"

I'll definitely make thicker black lines next time ha.  Thanks A Friend, that was very helpful.  I'm going to try out that inkscape program and give vectors a shot.  Are there any downsides I should be aware of using vectors? sick flamethrower by the way  :)

the only "downside" is adding finishing touches is slightly harder (imo) But then nothing stops you from opening the vector drawing in another program to do that

it doesn't hurt to have all the free programs you can and experiment with all of them
check out GIMP, Krita, Paint net and Inkscape

I can also vouch for Firealpaca and Paint.net as an easy workflow. Firealpaca is like a free and extensive version of photoshop, very easy to use and it can get the job done fairly quickly. I've found that Paint.net is useful for images that you want to apply a black border around, you can easily duplicate your image, make it solid black, make a gaussian blur and then duplicate that layer constantly until you have a black border. Consistent, too!

I tried out Krita and it's pretty awesome.  I'm going to have to reinstall though cause I keep coming across some bugs..

Tried pinta (paint net alternative for mac) and it's aight.

Firealpaca is stupid easy to work with so it may be my go to.  I like that gaussian blur effect so thanks for that tip!

kaptain_kavern

Wow thank you, even I managed to learn something from your tips, guys. (And I'm notoriously known for being ... well ... not able to understand "graphical stuff")

::)

jabbamonkey

There are plenty of tutorials out there on creating general icons (mostly using Photoshop). If you can create an icon, then you can create plenty of object textures for this game.

For example:

I didn't think about icon tutorials.  I'm sure I'll get some good use out of those.
Great work on the textures jabbamonkey! I like all of them, especially the generators.   My favorites are the benches since each of them have their own thing going.  Always felt those were a bit stale in vanilla. Keep up the good work!

Any guides for making atlas sprites like the conduits and walls?

I don't know much about atlas sprites (so I'll leave someone else to answer). However, I just noticed your avatar (the telescope). My graphic pack contains a new version...
