I mean some multy floor system, that should allow us to build 2-3 floored buildings and come underground structures.
One layer map becoming too tight in high progressed colony. The base becomes too wide and settlers are loses their ordinary spots of eat and work. cropfields fill half of base squere when there are about 10 colonists. Iron and other mineable resources becomes hard to collect. And traders doesn't save in that situation. Almost every game colony became agrofarm at the end. Some mods making it easyer to extract more resources from quarry. But multylayer map could be much smarter solution.
Multyfloor buildings could be perfect dormitory or factory that occupy small squere on terrain.
2nd or 3rd floor of defence tower allows to shot at longer range to attackers.
Negative level layers will make real mining experience, and tons of game solutions, storages, narclabs, undrground base or prison with some negative claustrophobic effect. I can't imagine all of features that will be opened with multylayer map generation it will be awsome, like new global map when it was released, it was like BOOM :)
I understand that it's a lot of difficulties in generation, colonist behaviour and pathfinding, but maybe you are in process of something like that?

unlikely because of how archers/gunners would have to fight as well as raids
The Red Empire shall rise, The Red Empire shall grow... POTATOES!!!

There are no current plans to add any z-levels to the game either now or in the future. There is likely more chance of multiplayer happening before z-levels. And multiplayer isn't happening either, which should give you a clue as to the chances of seeing z-levels.

I will lock this now because we do not need yet another thread about z-levels. If you want to contribute to the existing suggestion thread for this suggestion then do so here: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=29564.0
