Whenever I play rimworld I notice there is old ruins of buildings scattered around the map here and there and it has made me wonder why there has not been more extreme cases where a tile is completely covered in ruined buildings. We have biomes where it's almost fully mountainous and biomes where it's thick with trees... some are very barren with almost nothing. How about a new biome for city ruins? It could be filled with hidden dangers and pre-built structures but less natural resources such as trees and animals. There could also be a less extreme version of City Ruins called a Town Ruins where it has less structures packed closely together compared to the city.

I did some digging and I found an outdated mod which had a similar idea below:

I think this kind of environment would be very interesting to play on and is something I truly believe would fit into the vanilla game very well. Thanks for reading!

Sounds like a really cool idea.
and the free housing can easily be weighed up with a few infestations, barren soil and pavement and huge mood debuff from so much ugliness

Already been suggested in the past: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=34788.msg358288#msg358288

Along with fleshing out factions a bit more this is one of the last things I feel should really be added for a complete rimworld experience.

Try this mod : Configurable Maps

If you crank the ruins high enough it looks like a destroyed city.
You can even choose how many Ancient Ruins you want and if you want to use local rocks for walls or free for all.
Maxim 1   : Pillage, then burn
Maxim 37 : There is no overkill. There is only open fire and reload.
Rule 34 of Rimworld :There is a mod for that.

It wouldn't be any more imbalanced than a mountainous region and would be very atmospheric :)

Wouldn't agree on a city being a biome because the Rimworld is inhabited by factions. But more of a broken down faction base where a past colony perished, surely our factions aren't the only ones being raided and destroyed. Maybe for quality of life this could be a tick box in the world generation options or a slider (if Tynan feels like it) which would increase the rarity of these factions.

I think this one cold be quite cool, as the whole map can be used as a defense perimeter, with all its walls an corners, plus there could be traps everywhere.. and hidden or not hidden storage thingies. maybe a active turret somewhere ( I'd really really laugh when I will find a room with a turred and 50 batteries behind it).
They could also conaint a special animal, the "Survivor", which is a simple colonist, which wanders around, searching for food, and maybe attacking randomly

At least it shouldn't be a "biome" likre savanna or forest, as more a tile attribute like mountain, so cities arend huge as continents.

all in all I think a citiy as a biome with high dangers, but much ressources around.
I imagine some kind of looter event, where a group of raiders crosses the map and will leave again, except they see a colonist, then business as usual.

Agree it would fit well in the game.

Nod of acknowledgement to anyone and everyone who has conceived this idea.

Oblivion

+1 something that could branch of those ancient asphalt roads and highways, could include roads between the buildings as well. I feel like to balance out the already built structures there should be some threat such as cryosleep caskets with enemies in. Also add some new structure shapes in rather than the boring rectangle rooms or just a wall

patoka

maybe not as a whole biome as many players like to play on large maps, (i might be the only one that likes small ones more (that's what she said)) but we could definitely experiment with this as a rare place for you to get ambushed by pirates and other ill-meaning factions.
maybe make these a bit more probable on roads between towns, especially if there is no other town nearby (because there once was one, the one you are in currently, but it was razed, as you can see)

i would also enjoy seeing something like this if you have a resource stash in a thick forest or even a tropical rainforest and once you get close go to the only buildings that are still sealed, a raid or mass animals madness or flashstorms occur.

what i am trying to say is i would not recommend very large ghost towns. the one you showed still looks good, but more isnt always better in my opinion.
on the other hand, if you ever abandon a colony, this is what could be left over if you ever set foot in it again (but it would be blocked for at least a year

cool idea, but not exactly the most important addition i could think of
surely you dont need to rebutcher corpses that you already half butchered if you leave the table to smoke a joint real quick?
