B18 Performance Problems

Edit: I solved the issue so I don't need help anymore.

So, I'm having pretty bad performance problems with B18 and I'm not sure why. I've tried googling it and haven't really found much. A17 was perfectly fine, but B18 has these weird periods where the fps drops and stays low for a few seconds (5 seconds to 20+ seconds) and then it fixes itself. During that time the game doesn't even try to use more system resources, and nothing in task manager is over 20%.

Zooming out / in doesn't affect it, and the amount of pawns on the screen doesn't make a difference either. It happens just as frequently on new colonies as on older ones. Also biomes don't seem to make a difference, I've tried barren ones and it still happens. Annnd I'm not using any mods.

Skeletor

EXACT same issues. Game runs perfectly fine for 30 seconds and then nose-dives in FPS for 5-30 seconds... and then it just cycles back and forth. Can confirm that biomes mean nothing, size of colony means nothing, size of the MAP means nothing, hell I even reverted back to 17b and am having the SAME issues. I run a liquid cooled 4790k, GTX 980 Ti, and am still having these issues. I have turned off the grass sway as well in hopes that would solve the issue... but it sadly didn't.

Pretty please release a fix for this :( I LOVE this game, but currently don't want to play with how annoying this FPS issue is.

It always helps if you can post your log file (as an attachment) whenever you have a technical issue. Details on where to find it here: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=513.0

And if you experience a technical issue with any game, those who offer their help with it will always appreciate it if you can check in advance that your GPU drivers and O/S as fully up to date. Along with stating what O/S you are using. As it's very likely you will be asked to check these two things anyway, so always good to do it beforehand so that you can then state that "I have checked, and both my GPU drivers and O/S are up to date" when you make your first post.

I'm on Windows 10 w/ the fall update, and my GPU drivers are updated.

Is this your logfile that ran with the game when it had all those performance problems? The most common cause I see when the game is running fine but then has these momentary repetitive hiccups is periodic exceptions in the logs.

Yeah, that's actually why I didn't post the log file initially because there was nothing in it. The first thing I did was look at the log file. I did once get a message about missing frames or something, but it doesn't seem related to the fps drops. And googling it showed that it's a Unity message that sometimes happens when you minimize games, or something.

Anyway since Skeletor mentioned it happening on A17 for them, I'm going to try playing around with the window properties settings and see if that helps any.

So, I kind of solved my problem... Well, it's not really solved but it's manageable now. What I did was I disabled Windows 10 full-screen optimizations and set it to Windows 8 compatibility mode. The periods of lag still happen, but they seem much more rare and clear up much quicker now. Something I've noticed since doing this is that the game saving seems to be at least one of the things that causes it, so theoretically turning auto-saves off might remove the problem entirely.

I'd still like help solving the issue, but it doesn't seem like many people are experiencing this problem in the first place so it looks like I may be on my own here.

Have you tried playing in windowed mode instead of full screen?

I play in windowed mode normally.

So, assuming that there wasn't a patch or something I think I've figured out how to fix this. I deleted the game's settings from my computer entirely, and turned off Steam's cloud sync so when I reinstalled it I had a completely fresh install. Now I'm not getting the performance problems anymore as best as I can tell.

Good to hear you managed to resolve the performance issues you were having. And thanks for posting again to let use know about it (irrespective of how much time has passed). Much appreciated.

my mac keeps telling me that the game is unoptimized anyway.
