Greetings - I want this game.  I am almost ready to buy it.  I have absolutely no idea how to play, other than watching Quill18's intro video.

Is there a working, decent tutorial in the game?  If not, are there some guides, or tips for newbies on these forums, please?

Oh yeah - I also want Prison Architect.  Is this game better, in the opinions of whoever kind souls respond?  Should I bag PA and become a RimWorld junkie?

Thanks!

Hello. ^^

There is no 'deep' tutorial implemented in the game yet, but the game DOES give you a few alerts on what you should focus on first. It'll teach you what a couple of keys do, and what you should focus on at the start. For example, the alert "Need meal source" will only disappear once you manage to build a working stove. Same thing goes for the "Need defenses" alert that will only vanish once you build a working turret.
Other than that you will learn through practice and Let's Plays on Youtube. ^^

Now, this game is only similar to Prison Architect on a visual level and certain mechanics. Gameplay wise, I think the only similarity is that you have to build rooms for both your colonists and prisoners, while providing them with meals and decent environments.

Having spent a whole lot of time playing a pirated copy of the game, I finally put together enough money to buy it and I'm still enjoying it a whole lot! The constant updates are very much welcome, and seeing the modding community as it is now, it'll only grow bigger upon release. It's definitely a worthwhile purchase.

I bought PA quite a few Alphas ago. Played about 3 minutes---didn't feel like it far enough along to spend any time with. Bored out of the gate. Rimworld though---didn't even watch any youtube anything yet. Saw a little on RPS, bought it---and have already become stupidly addicted. Minecraft addiction level (which is saying a lot for me). This is already very stable and hugely playable and enjoyable. Let the Rimworld addiction begin. (Plus, it seems like a great community that will help you when you get started. The main thing I did was to basically read these forums, then ask about things when I couldn't find the answer I was looking for).

^ Yeah if anything i must point out how great this game ran right out of the gate. Ofcourse there are bugs but unlike some devs. Ty has gotten a lot of the game breaking ones out of the way pretty fast. (If you dl the prototype pack and run the 2 eclipse worlds you can see the real early installments of the gsme which had some pretty broken ai)

Northernlion also plays RimWorld. Badly :D You should watch his series.
I like how this game can result in quotes that would be quite unnerving when said in public, out of context. - Myself

The dubious quotes list is now public. See it here

I checked YouTube, but I don't see any RimWorld videos by Northernlion.

My bad, it was Mathas. Here's a playlist.

What sells Rimworld to me over PA is the little things. Building stuff in PA (at least the last time I played) is just a giant, constant kick in the unmentionables. Rimworld just lets you throw buildings up, then roofs them over when they're enclosed. It just works.
As others have said, they're both totally different games, but the simple business of picking up and playing is far easier in Rimworld than PA.

I learned to play RimWorld watching ZeroEmpires. He played Alpha 3 and gave me a good idea of what I should be doing for my colony. Then I bought the game and played. Give it a look :-)

I asked this in change log thread, but I thought I would bring the question out to the main forum.

So, as a new player should I get the game now, or wait for the next build?  I keep reading that it has become too difficult with the overpowering raids.  Is it super unbalanced right now, or is it still fun and very playable?

You can pick an easy storyteller and you will be perfectly fine. Pick Randy Random or Phoebe Friendly. Randy's AI is a bit broken this patch so he should be easy enough to take on and Phoebe will only send one or two enemies at a time I think.
