why is eating off the ground more depressing than losing a friend
The number of possible signatures there are might as well be, for practical use, infinite, yet I chose this one.

"Lost a friend" lasts a *long* time, while eating off the ground does not.  Think of the pain of losing a friend as "chronic", while annoyance at eating off the ground is "acute".
