Some characters sustain enough injuries to get downed but not much to cause them immediate death. However, some may be in severe to critical conditions when the expiration timer really matters.

You can choose to doctor the wounded on site or at your hospital, or somewhere in between literally. So far, the only way to check their status is by dropping them and re-picking them up which makes you lose a slight of movement. The wounded character should have a display of its health condition while taken for treatment.

Injured Muffalo

One related thing is how you're not allowed to treat an injured enemy without first capturing them in an enclosed room.

So if I want to save the life of some guy at an item drop, I first have to make a stockpile, cut some trees, build a prison and assign a prisoner sleeping spot before I can think about treating that shot off arm  ::)

It doesn't make any sense. You can escort your own prisoners around, but if they get shot, ooh, suddenly they need a whole facility.
A muffalo encountered a vimp near a patch of sweet vegetables. A struggle ensued. The muffalo gored the vimp with its horns. The vimp bit the muffalo with its beak. Finally, the vimp was bested, sending large chunks of its flesh in every direction. But the muffalo was injured. It shed a single tear.
