How did your colony die?

Hey all,

I would love to hear the stories of your colonies final moments whether you forgot to research a passive cooler and they died to heatstroke or if you were annihilated by a mechanoid raid I want to hear about it.

For me I was playing a save file for a few months on Rough with Cassandra Classic, I had built up to 12 pawns and everything was going rather well, then on one fateful day the colony came under threat from a mechanoid attack from the south consisting of 7 scythers and 3 centipedes, I move my colonists to the southern sandbags and the 3 non combatants stand by just inside the colony wall for rescue efforts, my Melee colonists flank left and start battering the scythers when I get the pop up for 'Man Hunter', a pack of 8 man hunting cougars were on the way so with that I pull back my melee to defend the snipers, the incoming fire from the mechanoids takes out several wall blocks leaving the inside of my colony open to attack, we retreat to the inner defences, 3 colonists down I use 2 non combatants to try and rescue the downed they each take a couple shots and just as we start pulling back a rocket explodes between them downing both, at this point the cougars are closing in so I have to leave them where they are for now the final mechanoid and centipede enter the base luckily both are close to death and died rather quickly after downing two more colonists leaving 3 melee 1 sniper and 1 non combatant who was hiding in the dining room at this point, just the colonists breathe a sigh of relief 8 cougars come charging in through the broken wall and quickly surround the survivors all of who are badly dinged up, 2 go down quickly and at this point I realise we can't win the fight, I send the two least injured toward the dining room to hide and live leaving the others as bait for the animals, quickly the bait is downed and the cougars come after the two fleeing for their lives, they catch up and down one they rapidly gain on the last, they open the steel door to the dining room and are halfway through when a cougar downs the colonist in one hit jamming the doors open, at this moment I regret very deeply that I only built one entrance to the dining room and watched in disbelief and sadness as my final colonist is downed and my 3 months of on off tending this colony come to an end.

Thanks and I look forward to reading your tales of the end

I feel your pain.  Manhunters are cake to deal with, until 1 door breaks and you're dead.

My most humbling loss was from a pyro.  I thought I was safe because I made my walls and doors out of stone.  I had lost some items to raids, so I enclosed my storage room and made it part of my monolithic base.  There were two stacks of chemfuel in the storage.  Of course, the pyro has a random break and runs straight for the chemfuel, blows it up, and sets half the storage on fire.  I still think it's ok, and make all my pawns fight the fire.  Then molotovs in the storage explode and make it worse.  All my pawns start passing out from heatstroke.  When I realize what's happening I try to deconstruct a wall to let the heat out, but it's too late.  Ironically, if the exterior wall had been wood it would have burned, let the heat out, and saved everyone.  Now I always banish the pyros, and use a stone room to hold flammables.

After killing the raiders chasing the refugee I offered shelter, I had 2 out of my 5 guys healing up from gunshots. That's when a flashstorm started to  burn up the surroundings of my base. Having to devide my healthy comrades between tending to the wounded, the 2 prisoners and hauling enough crops to be able to keep feeding everyone, another group of raiders decided to show up with grenades and an incediary weapon. Even though having only recurve bows I accepted the challenge, got the 2 wounded out of bed and engaged the raiders, all while a wall of flames was creeping up to my base.
I managed to win the fight having the invaders running for the hills, but not without getting everyone except my medic heavily wounded.
Quickly releasing the prisoners I had, to lower the burden on my 1 healthy guy, 2 of the wounded got an infection.

Still this wall of flame was creeping up on my base.

The final nail in the coffin was the medic and one of the wounded got the plague, sending the medic into a mental break.

Everything burned down, roasting people in their beds while my medic was smashing up furniture in a burning messhall

Then the rains came, washing away all that was left of my dreams of reaching outer space.

A new tribe; first day a social fight broke out and one guy decided to gnaw off the hand of another. I love this game.

The 20 day trip to the abandoned ship went smooth for my 4 colonist and muffalo. We where ambushed twice (one of 2 wild boars and the other a 2 raiders, no colonists wounded). After arriving at the ship I was shocked about the 15 day waiting time and that it would be a raid magnet (never went for the ship before). They not pack for it, but there was food for 12 days, enough medicine, some silver and a rich tropical terrain with all year growing. I decided to build a new colony to strengthen up, maybe spend a few months/year before powering up.

Then, as the first walls where being build, "Randy" decided to send in 7 manhutting alpacas. 3-4 colonist downed, the 4th "Mars" injured but still walking. Mars has been the hero of my story so far, he is one of the initial 3 and survived everything. 2 times he had to go on alone after raids, he found new friends, kept on going, and it was for him that I decided to go to the ship.

Mars rushes to helps his friends, and while carrying the first he goes in a tantrum. He start attacking the ship core while his friends bleed to death. He stops after it destroyed, gets and infection and succumbs to the blood loss. He dies alone in the jungle....

Giddy

Sadly, not how I'm feeling now, but he is the man responsible for the colony. He almost didn't make it into the drop-pods at the start, a beautiful psychically deaf woman was kicked out to make room for him because our other two heroes Panda and JJ realise they can't erect a wall between them and have no passion to do so.

Giddy is a builder, and uncharacteristically dreams of a side-business in medicine. He isn't practicing yet but a burning desire to help isn't a bad thing. He's also kind and a fast learner so shouldn't have any problem getting his medical license practicing on a few inmates.

JJ and Panda were never at risk for making the cut. Panda had burning passions for planting and art, and interested in and high ability in Shooting, Cooking, Social and Intellect. JJ had a burning passion for crafting and intellectual with passion in shooting, planting, medical and social.

They are wunderkind, and neither are carrying any scars or other ailments.

They crash land and set to work building a stockpile. Almost instantly JJ glances to Panda, something is wrong. They've hauled and killed the blueprints and Giddy has only just made it halfway to the place.

As he gets closer they start to wonder, "Just how old are you?"

"Why I'm 73, I've been a civil engineer longer than you've been born!", he answers back, unaware that JJ was not just technically 634 years old but JJ was biologically 77!

Giddy had a back problem. In fact he didn't just have a bad back he also was frail.

In their haste to get a builder with them on the drop-pods they hadn't questioned his age.

With movement down to 40% and manipulation down to 60, the problems started to roll in. Frequent botched constructions and long times waiting for any improvement were a trouble. He also refused to research or cook, two more useful stationary tasks.

JJ and Panda considered banishing him but they needed his construction skills. He may have botched a lot of constructions but the work he did produce was excellent.

Things went OK for a few seasons, but it fell to JJ and Panda to do all the hauling and cleaning which meant that they didn't get research done at any meaningful rate. In fact despite being able to pick up a couple of new colonists, machining wasn't researched until the end of septober.

It was just finished, a bench was just being laid down when the raid sirens sounded. A tribal raid of 3 people wasn't going to be cake-walk with only 2 guns between the five of them but they had some good walls around the base and they all head for the area of sandbags they cheekily nicknamed goods received.

A few minutes pass and there's no sign of the raid.

"That's odd, they should be here by now".

*thump*, *twack*, they look around to see part of a wall not constructed because Giddy had botched it and they had unknowingly run out of supplies to replace it. The tribal raid were right upon their wooden bedrooms and heading straight for them.

They all rushed into melee with JJ's bolt rifle ready to shoot from the back.

They downed one of the tribe members quite quickly but in their excitement hadn't realised an arrow from a shortbow fly right past their heads.

JJ was a social fella and he admired his Wolfskin cowboy hat. He had crafted it himself and was proud of the fine stitching, he thought how perfectly it kept the sun out of his eyes  so he could perfectly see that arrow flying toward...

He didn't have time to react, the arrow perfectly penetrated his skull and destroyed his brain.  JJ was no more.

Now the colony isn't technically dead, but panda just lost a friend and the new recruits can't between them replace the work JJ did. Panda is going to produce two sarcophagi, bury her friend and then resign herself to the other.

Don't give up until last colonist dead!  ;)

You're right, I went back to carry on without JJ.

I turned my back for a minute while typing that up and a Zzzt (I don't even have batteries!) managed to burn down everything, both my main and food stockpiles.

I came back to a scene where everyone was half-burned but guess who was unscathed?

I started playing this game sometime last year.  Just as I was emerging from the completely clueless stage I learned how to forbid doors.  An enraged man hunter pack message bloomed on my screen so I drafted all my pawns, sent them indoors, locked the doors behind them and sat down to wait out the enraged critters.  Aren't I the genius.

Did I mention the critters were a herd of six or eight elephants?  They made splinters of my doors, waltzed in to my building and made toe jam out of every one of my colonists in minutes.  Fade to black.
Send lawyers, guns and money.

2nd gameplay (naked brutality): on the 11th day - heatstroke, passed out, starved...
3rd gameplay (naked brutality): on the 6th day - wounded by Iguana, passed out for the bloodloss, eaten by a mad Yorkshire Terrier
4th gameplay (naked brutality): on the 5th day - first raid, lost fight, being kidnapped and carried away.

You know, just casually getting a raid and preparing my "tank" with flak jacket, flak pants and vest and a bolt action rifle to defend with a guy next to her to ambush a foe with his long sword and another guy inside base with a machine pistol if things went wrong. My longsword dude gets knocked out after killing 2 raiders out of 5. My "tank" gets downed after receiving a headshot. The backup guy with a machine pistol barely comes out of the door and gets oneshotted to death. Raiders decide to kidnap my people. All I'm left with is a doctor that is incapable of violence.

Thane

Starvation, on the road, in a desert, trying to attack a pirate base for some food, with alpacas. Long form to come to the stories section later.
It is regular practice to install peg legs and dentures on anyone you don't like around here. Think about that.

Blato

It was a small colony of 8 people, doing nicely on Cassandra rough.
One day 4 people went on a caravan trip to get a marine armor stash.
When they were 5 days away from the colony, a raid of 9 pirates appeared; 2 melle with shield belts and various ranged weapons.
The 4 colonists were barely holding their ground (this was a self imposed no exterior walls colony).
Suddenly, a zzzzt... event during a raid, no batteries so no big explosion, but a fire did start. The fire was in the kitchen and quickly spread to the food storage.
That's when I realized what I forgot... the entire base was made out of wood.
The fire couldn't be stopped with low manpower, and the raiders started molotoving the other side of the base.

So much fire.

The 4 survivors had to settle on a tile 4 days away. And they could swear that they felt the stench of smoke from the previous colony. A fire so large, the entire base in flames, the vegetation, the animals... even the raiders were caught in a blaze... everything was turned to ash.

PeyotePal

-Tried to tame Boomalopes, went on rampage, much explosion death
-pyromaniac
-kidnapped (solo adventurer scenario)
-pyromaniac (just how many firebugs are there in the future? Strange genetic mutation!?)
-escaped captive, no doctor

I no longer build as much out of wood, may they r.i.p

> 3 colonists
> hungry
> shoot muffalo
> 2% chance of hostility happens and entire herd goes manhunter
> entire colony downed
> man in black comes, gets downed, then taken away by raiders
> squirming on ground until starve to death
