So I'm playing on a arid scrubland, and it seems like I am getting wave after wave of beavers.  Anyone else notice this, or am I just winning the beaver lottery? The meat and fur is nice, but I really could do without them eating my scarce trees.

Same here. Two builds ago, the Alphabeavers got rebalanced (according to the update notes). They first lurk around before eating the trees so you have more time to hunt them down. However, they seem to come in the same numbers as before.

I don't bother hunting them in my colony (also arid shrubland) just to protect the 2 cactuses on the map since I'm growing my own wood in a walled-off area.

I don't know if this is either good or bad. ( The Event or incident. )

But i'm sticking to good. Since it's free meat and beaverskin leather does look nice for looks & for selling. (Which unfortunately is turned into light leather in v1.0, but still good for selling.)

I don't know i where you if there's beaver coming in to eat your trees in a arid shrubland. I would wall of the trees in my growing zone in my colony to avoid them eating them. Luckily you should stick with stone walls or metal & stone doors if you're going in mid or late game.

One "happy family" in the rims...

I have still not seen a single beaver incident in my any 1.0 playthrough.

Playing on vanilla temperate swamp and haven't seen beavers yet.
Used to see them a lot more often in past but i usually played on tundra. Not sure if it's biome or just RNG.

Me too, in a year and a half I've had 4 beaver incidents on the shrubland- in one they ate half my trees I had spent forever planting... Another one was odd, I set them to hunt in the wildlife tab and heard shooting, when I checked a few minutes they were gone and I had no meat. I suppose it makes sense in this biome in terms of having actual consequences, in heavily forested biomes beavers are almost useful at times.

If 1000 people play the game, 1 of 1000 is particularly lucky/unlucky and gets tons of beavers. No the chance seems the same, all in all I've had less than before, but all within the margin of randomness.

And those that are this lucky/unlucky come to the forums and notice this thread (or create it). So it's just selective perception and exposure effect.

Yeah, I know that any random generator will produce weird results given enough tries.  But this is an unstable build, so I just thought I'd mention it in case it was a common issue.  And I didn't know if beavers are supposed to be in an arid scrubland at all.  I grew up in what was at the time a small town in a similar environment, and beavers weren't really a thing there (super ugly opossums were though).

I think I'd call this a fairly neutral event.  It can be really annoying if you are trying to get something critical done and want your hunters on other tasks, or if you are low on trees and don't have any behind walls.  But hey, free food and leather.

I also found on an Arid Shrubland play that I got a shocking large number of beaver events, but I haven't seen a single one on any other biome  in any of my 1.0 playthroughs.  My current game has seen 4 years in Temperate Forest without any beavers at all, whereas that Arid Shrubland had them multiple times per year.

Still possible it's just random, however, the Arid Shrubland part there stands out.

Interestingly, beavers is a much worse event on Arid Shrubland as there aren't many trees, and tree growing has been rebalanced to be MUCH more labour intensive.  Beaver events in a temperate forest are largely irrelevant(or even decidedly advantageous, because of the meat and leather) as there's basically unlimited trees most of the time anyways.

I definitely suspect chances are different per biome.

I used to enjoy clearing alphabeavers with grenades. Sadly, this is no longer a thing in 1.0.

Griggers

Beaver incident appear only on tundra and arid in 1.0
In my first game of NB on tundra I had to quickly switch over to electricity and using steel/stone for constructing as there were no more trees left after the first winter.
I know the beavers are supposed to be a challenge but the thing I don't like is that some biomes can not recover after those incidents(thrumbo, toxic, fire, beavers).

I can't seem to find reference to this at the moment (the light leather thing) - can you provide a link? I'm curious what changed.
