Women colonist running into the wild are called "Wild man" when the pop-up tells you they are going into the wilderness.

I'll post here, since they're fairly closely related: there might also be a bug where wild men are women 100% of the time? I'm playing on 1.0 (latest), and I don't think I've ever seen a wild man who was male, in the last week of playing.

Pretty sure I've seen at least one male wild man.

Not quite 100% on that, but pretty close. Been playing a lot of sea ice, so there haven't been a lot of "wild man" events for me either way.

Wild man is a race like human or muffalo, yeah they better should called Wild human but that's a part for the feedback topic or suggestion.
