The Hopper, you mean?

It probably wouldn't make much sense for most things. Textiles (Such as cloth and leather), wood, stone chunks, steel, and components wouldn't work well in a hopper. At most it might make a bit of sense for breweries, drug labs (When making yayo, flake, and smokeleaf joints), and stoves (When cooking with plants), as they're the only production benches that use a commodity that'll flow through a hopper. But overall, a hopper wouldn't help much if you're doing things by hand.

Side tip: You can place ingredients in a one tile stockpile adjacent to the crafting bench to effectively increase work speed by reducing the time it takes for the colonist to get the ingredients.

Personally I think it'd be really great if work benches could use hoppers. It's not very different than placing a shelf next to the work bench.

Hoppers are nearly identical in function to stockpiles, though. They don't keep items from spoiling or anything, so what's the benefit to workbenches? You'd save the half a second, for a pawn to grab items from a mini-stockpile set up right beside the bench?

Tip:
a good setup for certain work benches is to have the bench facing north, the pawn works at the south side of it. A preferred 1x1 zone to either side of the pawn with a stool in it for raw materials. Bill set to drop on floor with a 1x1 zone south of the pawn set to low priority for whatever it is you are making. Be amazed as your pawn blasts through raw materials without taking a single step!

It seems a bit strange that only one orientation works that way and not the others.

Pawns have a bias to drop items to their south. Doesn't make hoppers any more useful, though. :)
