B19 - Caravan "waiting" at waypoint

I made a caravan and made a route that avoids an enemy base by setting a waypoint. But, when my caravan got to the waypoint, they are sitting there for days and the caravan is just listed as "Waiting". Is this intended? It doesn't seem to serve any purpose because while they are waiting, I cannot visit their camp and dig or anything.
I was surprised to read about Angkor Thom in Cambodia. I looked up what "Thom" means and it's "big" or "great", so my avatar icon is ធំ which is "Thom" in Khmer.
