This is a survival game and the 3 things vital to survival are water/food/shelter.

Early game it could start like this:  There are cactus in this game and that can lead to a chore where your colonist can extract the water from them and perhaps a little food (that way your starting colonist aren't completely overwhelmed with this task to start).  Also the ability to build just a basic bucket for rain water collection.  Water can be plentiful or scarce based on the map which adds another level of gameplay.

Technologies can be researched to put in wells/larger rain water collectors, water storage, etc.

Water would be used to add another need to colonist that must be meet.  Also plants would require some degree of water and can die during extreme droughts.  Irrigation would prevent this but would use up that precious resource.

I have to agree with you. Over two thirds of the Survival games I've played, whilst good, lack the water mechanic. I personally think it would be essential for any survival game.
You see this tank?

This tank is the epitome of "I'm going to destroy you"

This tank can make Chuck norris cry.

All hail the Takemikazuchi.

PsychoForge

Id love to see water collection and drinking req's in the game also would make it so much more realistic.

A small river or lake running through the land would work.  A desert region though would contain none of that but again research can be used and have your colonist create a lake/river.  You could create a river but if it's not generated with the map then no water should be coming in from off map.  You would just use the river to move water from one lake to another.

Bodies of water would add another food source, fish.  Fish would have to be purchased by trade for man-made lakes but generated ones would already come with it.

You can see where I'm going with this, making the truly desert maps the hardest.

Agree. It's too weird that a survival game counts power, food processing but doesn't care about water. Some food may contains water but that is far from enough. Maybe it is more reasonable to put water as compulsory ingredient for any meals, so you don't have to deal with "drink", "thirsty" things.

TrashMan

Snow - can me melted into drinkable water

In other areas - a water collection "machine". It's as simple as using the humidity and condensation to get drinkable water. Easily buildable, but not very effective.

You can also dig for underwater water sources.

Somz

Well, diggable wells, rain-collectors, moisture vaporators, harvestable cacti, steam (geyser) collectors, each rather easy to implement, and could be used in various stages of the game, the use of water should be easy too, it'd be cool and fun in my opinion.
To beer or not to beer.
That is a laughable question.

cj9999

I think that water idea is very good.

more over if implemented there are new possibilites
-water power plant (if there will be rivers)
-purify facility (to clean water from rivers)
-showers (morale bonus)
-water storage (similar to power storage)
-water wells
-water pumps (to get water from well more effectively)

StorymasterQ

Seriously. Showers can also provide morale bonuses to female colonists. Excuse my dirty, dirty mind.
I like how this game can result in quotes that would be quite unnerving when said in public, out of context. - Myself

The dubious quotes list is now public. See it here

And male conlonists.
Especially if there are communal showers. ;)

You would poison yourself on cactus water.

LeoTiger1986

I think a water mechanic would be a great idea, but we need a little more space for new stuff like this.  If solar panels were 3x3 instead of 4x4, I think the game would be pretty balanced.

...Why exactly? Because if one kind of cactus' sap/juice isn't edible, that immediately means all the cacti are poisonous? Some have far better qualities than mineral water.
