I wanted to try out alpha 5 today but when I start the game I just get a blank black screen. I never had problems with other versions of Rimworld so I don't know what is going on here. :(

Pokka

It's working fine for me. Just installed and tried last night.

I just checked and now the other versions of Rimworld are not working either. I have had this problem before with Minecraft giving me a black screen and no one was ever able to help me fix it. I don't know why this happens and it is very annoying. I was able to fix the problem before by wiping the computer clean and starting over but that is a real pain so it would be nice if someone could please figure this out for me and find a fix?

Heya,

Try uninstalling your GFX card drivers... then re-download/reinstall. Rebooting can't hurt... and then try running the game again.

That would be the simplest option to try. If you've have recently updated your GFX drivers... it could be that the new GFX version might be buggy for the game. Find the earlier GFX driver version and install that instead.

If that doesn't help... try and find out and keep track of the last programs you've installed and remove them... reboot... and run the game again.

I'm not sure if RimWorld keeps sufficient logs - otherwise you might find information pertaining to the problem there.

Hope you get the game up and running. :D

If you're running Windows, you can try a recent Windows Restore.  You could also look through the Event Viewer (Admin Tools) and see if anything suspicious pops up there.

Haplo

One reason, where you can get a black startup screen in alpha 5 is, when you start alpha 5 with active alpha 4 mods.
In this case, go in the following folder and delete the file ModsConfig.xml
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Ludeon Studios\RimWorld\Config\

THIS HAPPENED TO ME. i dont know how i fixed it but i did. your not the only one,

Tynan

1. Delete old mods and data as Haplo explained.

2. Install it in a folder without special characters in the path. E.g. C:/Games#2/RimWorld will not work because the game can't process a # in the file path.

It's not a problem with the game itself everything was fine a few days ago. Alhpa 5 is a fresh install but now I see alpha 4 is also not working but this black screen is only affecting Rimword everything else on the PC works fine games movies everything. I don't know what makes this happen or for to fix it but when this happened to Minecraft I did a reformat and everything worked fine after that so I guess that is what I will have to do again. Just wish I knew why this happens so I can prevent it.

The only possible thing I can think of is Java but that's all installed and up to date so I don't know what could mess that up.

Try backing up your saves to another folder then delete them along with A4 and A5. Do a fresh install.

Note that running A4 after having run A5 once on my system caused a bunch of error messages to pop up on the title screen of A4.  Maybe a black screen is your system's equivalent of this.

As has already been stated, graphics card driver sounds like a likely culprit if it affect more than one game.

Find upgrade instructions from your vendor (Nvidia, AMD/ATI, Intel), and read/follow them carefully.

Dont rimworld needs a microsoft framework or something similar?
Thing is that you might just dont have libraries needed, as most games that have self installer will ask you to install them.
They are mostly between one next button and another next button dependable how fast you click :D
So maybe rimworld dont works becouse you did fresh windows install and didnt install any othergames that had that framework in thier installation or directx. Not sure what rimworld needs :D
All i do is clutter all around.
