Colony Religion

I have an idea that I think would add more depth into the Sociology behind colonies. Colonies should form there own religions. I'm not saying just generic Christianity, Judaism, or anything like that. Instead just a broad aspect of religion. Say you have a tribe, starting from the ground up, and they have all these negative mood affects. And then one day, Crazy Dave starts ranting about the visions he's seen. Of a god, or gods that ask of him to spread their message. And then over time his rants become sermons, or rituals, and the rest of the colony begins to believe as well. And before you know it, the colony has formed its own theological views.

The religion could be a base, monotheistic, polytheistic, pagan, or even satanic belief. And each religion has its own pros and cons. Such as, a satanic religion could require regular human sacrifices to appease their god, or a polytheistic religion could require pantheons to be built, and altars. Or even regular, scheduled times of worship.

And on top of it all, these religions could have positive and negative effects on the colony, such as improved work speed, harvesting rates, improved health and immunity stats, but if not followed "correctly", "sinners" could get negative effects as well. People cursed with plague, and other illnesses, a swarm of rat infestation etc.

And finally, religion could spark religious wars between factions, and your colony could generate quests to eradicate the "non-believers".

New building options would unlock with the discovered religion, such as altars for worship, altars for sacrifices and offerings, churh pews, prayer mats, and religious sculpture options. And whichever colonist is highest in the Social skill, would make the best preacher, preist, cult leader, and so forth.

This seems like a really big and complicated mechanic to add into the game with the current level of content it has. Not to mention that pretty much everything would become about religion at that point. It does sound like a good basis for a mod though in my opinion.

I like this idea, but I agree it would make a great mod. Maybe make it a kind of optional thing that you may not even NEED to focus on, like drugs and beer in the vanilla game. You would have to build something specific or take a certain action to kind of kick off the religion mechanics.

I believe there is a Chutulu mod out there that has cults and has some features like this, but I've never used it personally. It looks to be pretty big and in-depth, but I think it shows something like your idea is certainly doable.
