Game: A17 Steam version
Setup: Windows 10 Pro x86-64, i7-4790K, GTX 960, 16 Gb RAM, SSD

Error: black screen and "not responding" after couple of seconds. No sounds as in post above, system "busy-cursor".

Graphic drivers reinstalled and up-to-date. Instructions from OP post: done. This is still happening.

Played yesterday and everything was OK.

UPDATE:
Another game made on Unity (Battlerite) give me the same error. Other games (on Unreal Engine and Blizzard games) work fine. May be it will help.

UPDATE 2:
If I exit Steam and launch game directly by binary it works. What additional logs from Steam should I show to solve this problem at all?

UPDATE 3:
Even Windows reinstall can't fix this. Excuse me, but fuck this shit.

nccvoyager

First, check to make sure that DirectX is properly installed on your system.
DX9 should only be used as a fallback option on Windows 10, as DX11 should be automatically detected and used by default.

I have DirectX 12 in my dxdiag. MS installer said to me that I have actual version.

xuekalin

I downloaded this game from Steam and cannot run it.
I tried uninstall and re-install for few times, also I tried to use the delete register entry. I think I already block all my virus protector and allow Rim world in windows firewall.
My computer is win 8, 64 bits system. What could I do to run this game?
Thank you

@555, The log file you posted states that your system is actually using DX9 for RimWorld.  That means you've got some kind of graphic driver issue.  What's your graphics card?  A problem like this is often fixed with a newer driver, or (if you're already "up to date") by uninstalling/deleting the graphics driver, rebooting, and letting Windows Update look for a generic replacement.

@redhazor, sorry I didn't get to you sooner.  Are you still experiencing this?  What version of Windows do you have?  What's your graphics card?  If you could, also attach the log file (see link in my sig).

@xuekalin, we'll be glad to help you out too.  All I know right now is that you have Win 8 and the Steam version of RimWorld and that you "cannot run it".  What exactly does that mean?  There's a lot of ways a program can break, so the more detail you can give the better help we can provide.

kuwingto's post about the game running every other day was split into it's own thread here:

I found the ultimate "Linux black screen at launch" fix...  Seems there are bugs in Unity around newer versions of glibc.

A solution is listed here (he even lists RimWorld as impacted)
https://ctrl.blog/entry/glibc225-unity-black-screen

Worked for me after adjusting the path to libjemalloc.so.2

@ erjo5055 ^ - Have you tried:

1 - Simply restarting the game and/or rebooting your computer? A lot of those errors seem to be from the game using a config file from an old version (A16 v1393) and throwing errors because it doesn't recognise all the new terms for stuff introduced since then. IIUC the game should update this config file each game launch so if you restart/reboot the errors should, in theory, be gone (as the config file is no longer out of date).

2 - Following the steps to perform a clean reinstall as outlined in the OP of this thread. Try #1 above first as that's easiest, but if that fails then try #2.

If neither of these help then please can you post your full log file (as an attachment) from after you've performed a clean reinstall and attempted to start a new vanilla game (I'm not sure if you are intending to use any mods but if so please wait until the game is working before doing so).

If you do need assistance, please also tell us what version of Windows you're running.

Hi, I need to tell you that with Chinese Tencent QQ running (process name is qqprotect.exe) , the game won't start. Can you fix it?

That qqprotect.exe program has been known to cause issues for RimWorld. So simply disable it when running RimWorld

If you are asking if this can be fixed, then the likely answer is don't know/maybe. If you are asking if this will it be fixed, then the likely answer is no (unless it's a trivial fix, and even then likely no as it still takes time). All IMO (This is not a quote or message from the developers, and should in no way be taken as one).

If every developer had to account for, and fix, every clash with every other piece of software, then I doubt anything would ever get done. So unless Software A is somehow necessary for Software B to run, then it's far more sensible, and logical, to just not use both pieces of software at the same time. (ie. the common sense solution).

Hey guys, Windows 7, AMD R9 290, I'm struggling with this black screen issue as well. When I load the game it shows the main menu art, and when the box says 'initilizing interface...' it goes black. Here's what I've tried so far;

System Restart
Verify game files
Delete config and other files + verify + system restart
Reinstall
Clean Reinstall
Clean Reinstall on External Drive
Different graphics software from current, beta current, older, far older (2 years). Some of these gave me a pink screen, others gave me the same initizliation then black screen.
I've updated net, and directx, I've also tried reinstalling both.
I've tried forcing d3d9 and d3d11

/e Since posting I've also tried a clean reinstall without steam cloud sync and such turned on but it didn't work.
/e2 I couldn't find a legit way to test an older version as I have a steam copy, but upon peer sharing an a16 version of rimworld, the a16 version was able to run on my computer. Perhaps my issue is with steam? Regardless, I'm not starting the a16 versions campaign as I'd like all the newest content and updates that come with owning the game.
/e3 I've since found the beta options for other versions of the game. A15/A16 do not work for me through steam.

Any help would be great! I've attached my output log.
