When a trader goes to your colony in the middle of no where they take a huge risk of being unable to trade, and they also risk dying from pirate attacks.

And thus they should listen to your colony when you tell them we need food, metal, weapons, or slaves so then they can at least trade. Maybe you could even ask for loans if you're facing tough times with some sort of agreement to pay them back. If you don't then "enforcers" could co-erce you to pay with your lives or other resources.

Chances are if these traders are wading through pirate territory to trade with you they must be pretty tough (badass)

Also I don't think a colony should have a low limit on colonists 50 colonists doesn't sound too far fetched. I doubt a colony of 9 people could attract the attention of thousands of tribals and pirates. Not to mention local friendly factions.
