Saved games won’t load

As I was trying to open RimWorld through Steam the game started to act like it was the first time downloading it. Even though I saw the shortcut on the desktop and I had played earlier in the day. During this process it did find the previously existing files so it popped up within a few seconds. When the menu loaded the save files were still there, however when I tried to play it gave me an error message. The only mods being used are core.
