So i have been playing this game on a friends steam account a wile ago, (yes i know it's cheap)
Anyway, The game was at that time great even when it was in a so called "Beta stage".
With alot of other game releases that made my priority list Rimworld got forgotten, but was still on my "Wishlist" So today was the day i thought i would be buying the game.
But then i noticed something, The last update of the game was made in January, Tomorrow its April.
Thats a very long time without any updates, or new features.
I dont want to complain but to make a very long text short, i dont want to buy a game thats not being maintained.
Alot of games have been released and then abandoned by its developers.
Maybe i have misunderstood the updates and it only shows "Major Updates" and not minor onces, in that case please let me know.

And just to be clear,
I'm not a - World of Warcraft is dead - conspiracy - foil hat -Only made a an account to complain.

I'm a poor uneducated student that want a good advice if i should buy this game or wait.

Rimworld has not had an update since January because Tynan released the game and took a well-deserved break. Considering the product he released has a 97+% approval rating and sold over a million copies... well I can say he earned it way more than most developers :D.

The game is arguably even better now that it's finalized because mods finally have a chance to grow without interruption. If you liked the game before you will still like the game today.

As to future updates... well Tynan said he isn't "done" with rimworld but that doesn't mean you will see updates at the same pace as before. He spent 5 years on this game alone which is a pretty hefty time investment for a developer. Just remember Rimworld is now a "poster child" for how indy early access games should be done. If it never receives another update at all it is STILL better than 99.9% of the garbage even triple-A developers release today.

Don't feel terrible about "borrowing" a friends account. Again rimworld has probably converted more "pirates" to "payers" than just about any other game out there. Only the hard cases are going to judge you for trying before you buy. The only time its ever really "bad" is if you do something dumb like play 500 hours and never give the devs a dime for their time.

You should wait until you finished your study ! :-)

If you're going to play mods... Then yes... Because there's like a 100+ Mods made when Tynan is taking well-deserve break from his hard work... And there's a ton of amazing mods like Call of Cthulhu and Medieval Times Overhauls and Mods that allows you to play with new Alien Races...

But if you're going to college, you might want to finish your studies first... ;)

It's probably the most "worth it" game in terms of time played and enjoyed of any game I've ever owned, save maybe Skyrim.

KillTyrant

Its a good game with alot of replayablity. If youre broke then I suggesting holding off until it hits a good sale. However, its worth it even at full price.

Rimworld doesn't go on sale.

True...

But compared to Triple AAA titles... It's still cheaper, than those games... with a $60 or a $70 price tag on it...

It's still a good buy. With huge mods and replay-ability... Wasn't disappointed when i got it when came out in Steam early access in those A14 days... :D

I barely frequent this forum. I gave general life advice which is applicable to most circumstances.

Where? Last I check there were just no plans.  Things change all the time.  PLUS it has already been put in a bundle which you would have indeed saved money if you were interested in those games.

type in "sale" in the search bar and read the half dozen threads discussing it?

Or look at this: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=37847.msg387529#msg387529

You just proved my point how these things change.  Game is out of EA now and it has already been bundled since then which is better than a sale in most cases. He also confirms how it would go on sale eventually. Lots of consumers out there who don't mind waiting years for a sale since there are plenty of other games that you can grab for cheap.

Buy RimWorld if you like Fun™, a la Dwarf Fortress.  If you, however, find you like more structured, directed gameplay (i.e., like most other games ;)), RimWorld may not be for you.  I like RimWorld a lot, myself, and so do a lot of other people, BUT its general lack of clear-cut, enforced goals (beyond escaping the planet, although even that is fully optional) isn't everyone's cup a' tea.
Thanks, belgord!

I don't entirely agree on this one. Yes, Rimworld doesn't have a directed plot like let's say Witcher but it's also not completely free form do whatever game. It somehow strikes this perfect balance between being a free form game while you still usually have goals until very late in the game. Goals like "find any medicine to survive next infection", "get money to buy fancy medicine to survive a potential plague", "find heart donor for an old colonist", etc. That keeps it pretty captivating and focused even without game-enforced plot.

And yes, I'd definitely buy this game, it has tons of fun and tons of replayability. And I wouldn't necessarily count this game as done and abandoned. Tynan hasn't indicated what he'll do next but later in dev cycle (last couple years), it was normal to have many months between updates due to game complexity and the blog would sit silent for months.

I find it pretty amazing that with all these numerous companies with huge budgets, the game that I ended up being addicted the most throughout decades of gaming, was made by a tiny team of several people.
