Make carbon monoxide appear in enclosed areas during a fire or when breathing colonists. Colonists with 200% breathing efficiency would create twice as much carbon dioxide. Plants would absorb it. Ventilation could air the rooms. That would be cool

Wait would that mean our guys will die from no oxygen and asphyxiation when fire is around?

Quick! Everyone deconstruct the roofs and the walls, Forget extreme high temperatures there's to much carbon monoxide and smoke!

How would this work with bonfires under thick roofs? Would this mechanic include ventilation systems to prevent asphyxiation as well?

Adding in carbon monoxide means more than just that, you'd need an entire gas system. Plus you'd need better ventilation, like the redistheat pipes.
