carts for colonists

hello
for now the carrying stuff from distant places is very time consuming (1-2 route per day) and slow.

I would like to suggest carts (from wood prehaps) for carrying cargos and bodies so the colonists do not have to run so much.
possible limitation/suggestions
-cart have to be pulled by 2 colonists (less cargo)
-cart (eventually larger the for colonists) can be pulled by domesticated animal (if this would be available in the game) (more cargo)

TrashMan

I like.
What are we talking capacity-wise? 10 items?
Carts have to be dropped to use other stuff?

You can make hauling tasks a bit easier by building roads to the site and placing stockpiles along the way. Getting a dozen short hauls into a convenient spot (like a shed) is far more effective than 2 huge ones.

Hauling is the single biggest job for a colony. Making that easier means making pretty much everything easier. But if you insist, try out the conveyor belt mod. It's a bit tricky to use with current AI, but when it does work it's beautiful.

TrashMan

Hm...cart station?
You basicaly build a cart station and order the colonist to use it.
The colonist will haul stuff as long as he's using it (and will auto-stop when hungry). He'd take the cart, collect stuff in it, and drop it back at the cart station and from there the stuff would be carried normally.

Colonist goes, picks up stuff, colonist brings stuff back to wherever.
How exactly would you make more than one colonist pull a cart?
Colonist goes for the cart? Then to the site the stuff is? Colonist puts stuff in cart? Then colonist does nothing because the other colonist isn't coming to pull the cart, has different hauling priority.
I think implementing this would be hard at the very least and about just as much useless and ineffective. =|
To beer or not to beer.
That is a laughable question.

I can imagine the implementation very easy.

Imagine that you have some of goods faraway from base. Currently when you want carry these goods to base, you mark them as carryable and colonist are picking them one at time and carry them to base. its very time consuming.

cart could work like this
there can be 3rd status to goods "carry by cart" and colonist would pick the cart from base a lift up such marked goods. until to cart is full or all marked goods is carried to base

Yes, yes I got it the first time you explained. Sorry but as far as I know, it'd be pretty hard to implement (based on the response of other ideas such as this), Tynan also stated that moving anything that's bigger than one tile (/square) is a hard pain in the ass and will not be in-game for a long while/never
(i.e.:more than one tile big tanks idea shot down), which brings up the problem:
How do you plan on filling a cart that can carry only 1 stack of anything?
For 2 stacks you'd most likely need 2 tiles to move and so on.
Also, again, what if you have only 1 colonist available, what will this one do then?
Can't pull the cart so it'll probably do nothing or will proceed with other tasks.
I must say, as far as I know the implementing difficulty / effectiveness 'value' isn't promising. :-\

Make a mod of this idea if you can, or present it to someone interested in realizing it but it probably won't take place in the core game, even though it's a sound idea.
To beer or not to beer.
That is a laughable question.

Who says it would need to be larger than one tile? If it's a simple wheelbarrow or a small cart, it could be drawn together with the colonist. Hell, the centipede is visually already much larger than a single square and yet it is in the game, so there's no reason a visually large cart couldn't do the same. Hell, making the colonist even drag the cart behind himself would make it fairly easy to implement ;)

As for multiple stacks... do they really have to be shown all at once? If the cart/wheelbarrow would simply store information about several stacks that are put into them, it should pose no problem at all.

Modding this sounds like a good idea, but without the ability to rewrite original code, it might be quite a bit harder to implement than it would be for Tynan...

TrashMan

You already have a nano-storage mod whech has a box that cna store tons of items.
I figure a cart would beasically be a mobile storage with the lowest priority, but is always filled first by a colnist that is using it, and emptied only when not in use.

The only way I could see this working is if the cart could have 4 spaces worth of stuff on it, loaded and unloaded by a colonist was pulled by a domesticated muffalo with the colonist riding it, basically a 2x2 storage cart.  I think it could work but we need domesticated muffalos first.  Would take a little bit longer than hauling a single stack, but actually hauling 4 stacks at a time would make it more efficient.  Even if it was just hauling a single stack with 4x the normal stack limit it would still be decent.
