This is a feature designed to push back against OP growing practices involving sun lamps. Sunlamps doubling production rates (even when placed in roofed fields) was just too much.

Sun lamps will grow faster than natural light - just a little bit faster instead of like +70% (because there is a period when plants will grow but the sun is down).

Sunlamps are also still the only way to grow food indoors, so I'd say they are far from useless. Combined with the fact that hydroponic basins have fertility value of 3.5 (compared to rich soil with 1.4), I'd say it's a step in the right direction.

I think it would be a good idea to make sunlamps turn off automatically when plants stop growing, though, so as to make them less wasteful.

Completely disabling nighttime growth for Hydroponics tables even when a couple of sunlamps are nearby is not realistic at all.

Real plants need darkness, they wither if you don't follow the natural cycle of light-dark. Be glad the game is not that realistic ;D

How about the fact these plants are growing to maturity in a couple of days instead of weeks or months ( in the case of potatoes ).

Wow. That was actually new info to me. I'm... completely stunned I didn't know that. I sometimes wondered if subjecting plants to 24/7 bright light would actually be harmful to most of them, or if extra light would be just completely useless in most cases. But that they (some plant species?) actually NEED darkness to bloom? Time to track down my old biology teacher and go give her a stern speech, I guess.

Well. In that case. I, too, support disabling nocturnal growth, but it'd sure be nice if the sun lamps turned off automatically as well.

And, uhh, yes... sun lamps are still needed for any indoor growing. I apologize for not realizing that. Duh.

Wow, hydroponics tables have more than double the fertility of rich soil?  I thought they were pretty similar.  I feel like an idiot now...

The sun lamp burns a ton of energy, so I certainly don't like the idea of the sunlamp being at full power when plants can't even grow at night. Should it have an automatic night mode?

It would help to change the "days to fully grown" display, as it relies on a 24 hour clock which is no longer accurate.
