How do you deal with Mechs?

I was really lucky the first few encounters I had with mechs. Firstly they dropped straight into the middle of all my turrets and got destroyed, then they dropped into a place with plenty of rock and I proceeded to ruin there day with a few mini guns. I laughed manically at my obvious mastery of this game!

Since then though I get absolutely wrecked in every encounter with them. They drop down well outside my base and I have to go and get them before everyone goes nuts. I've tried sniping, but it either takes to long or a scyther murders him, I've tried automatic weapons, but they can rarely get close enough (especially against the slugs). Perhaps the solution is simply have 5 guys with the M-24 rather than 1-2.

Anyway, I'll stop my rambling :) How do you guys do it?

I use to rush the centipedes and kill them In close combat... Scythers make that difficult however

in the mid-game i tend to use 2 EMP mortars (manned by a single gunner), 2-4 EMP grenadiers, and mini-gunners. but this tends to get risky in the late-game.

so i just switch to spamming enough normal mortar barrage after sniping the mech's nest with a troop (to spawn the mechs). then after prolonged mortar bombardment, the mechs usually rush in towards my killbox. the scythers are fast so they die first, then the heavily damaged centipedes gets stun-locked to oblivion by my turret killbox.

mortar overkill for the endgame.

I usually tank them with turrets.

Early on I just take em on with my colonists. If you micro manage them then you can literally fight 24/7.

I heard that mechs actually cause loss of sanity. Don't you mean the ship part? Just encase it in wood and drop the ceiling.

If the problem is actually stationary mechs causing this...then you've got to keep a cycle of colonists to fight the mechs build a wall far enough away to snipe the mechs and incite them to attack the base, Take out the sythers with two groups of colonists one to draw their fire and  the others to kill the sythes. Then make a run to the base.

Also keep lots of "depots" that keep useable food all over the map. Safe houses so to speak. Batteries and food dispensers.

Ahh I didn't know you could provoke them in attacking the base, I thought they just patrolled around the crashed A.I. So I'm assuming it's similar to a siege scenario, where if you deal enough damage/kill the scythers they will eventually storm the base?

yep. i usually just force attack the mech ship with mortars. but the mechs tend to get hit by accident.

then the mechs either aggro after a while and gets murdered in my killbox or i get to destroy the ship with my mortars. either way is fine.

but i haven't really tried using elite sniper squads using hit & run tactics though.. might be worth a shot.
