First i'd like to say that this game is Very well done already for being in the alpha stages, much better then just about every indie developer i've seen. Cheers to that.

That's now what i wrote this to ask/talk about though.

I was wondering if anyone has just dug into the mountains to find minerals and found any? Like, without them showing on the edges first.

ShadowTani

Yes, you can find both minerals, hidden caves and steam vents inside the mountain. :3

rimiggy

steam vents too? Awesome! I didn't want to start digging for nothing lol

Raufgar

There is a set number of steam vents populated on any given map, depending on the size. On a medium-sized map, the limit should be 4. Not sure if that has changed or not. Meaning if you already see 4 SV on the map, that's it, unless you get mods to increase that number.
Don't be afraid to voice your opinions...

The worse thing that can happen to you is that you'll get your ass capped.

Coenmcj

Depends on the map's x by y, I get more steam vents on average in 275 x 275's than I do in 250 x 250's for instance.

i happen to be playing on the largest map, i only see 4 steam vents but only 2 are close by.

Coenmcj

Definitely go digging then, there'll be quite a few hidden deep in the mountain, generally you'll find one or two on the medium maps. so if you're on the largest you've probably got a gold mine of steam vents located in the rock somewhere.

Although it is a cheat of sorts, you can quiclky check a map for underground veins and vents by opening the dev tool and removing fog.

Yep in my latest colony I found two steam vents within the mountain I was mining. By conserving power I managed to move all of my power production deep underground and sealed the entrance behind me.

Didn't your colonists suffocate?  If I understand you correctly and you completely sealed off your only access to the outside world, then I would think the air wouldn't stay healthy in that sealed up place for very long.  (It would be kind of cool if Rimworld modeled air ventilation/air quality.)

@Mystic, I think there's a mod that does that.  ;)

EDIT: Oops, not yet.  There was talk of one, though:

There's an exploitey method for finding caves aswell.
Drag the no roof tool over the mountain.

Rimworld at one point (When it was Eclipse colony) used an Air system.
But to save you the trouble of trying to suggest it. Check this. :)

Thanks for the link. What Tynan is talking about there goes well beyond the basic implementation that had occurred to me (which was just that if your colonists spend a long enough time in a *completely* sealed off area, they would start to develop lung/health problems as a result and might end up in bed/impaired right when you need them). But Tynan's points about the game-worthiness of the concept are all well taken. And it's not like everyone is going to build colonies that are completely sealed off (the idea had never even occurred to me until I saw it in this thread), so I'd think most players would never encounter such a subsystem in the game anyway - hence, not the best use of development time.
