searching for "AI" is hurting my brain, so if anyone can point me to a preexisting thread or page about AI modifications, I'm looking to understand the basics of how it works, specifically raider behavior/combat AI.

There were some mods in previous Alpha dealing with AI: Project K9.
It is however no more supported and I believe there are only few people trying to work on AI. :P

Otherwise, get Ilspy and look directly into Tynan's code (decompile the dll RimWorld581Win_Data\Managed\Assembly-CSharp.dll).

A brief rundown of how squad AI works by anyone who's got it all figured out would be tremendously helpful. I'm going over the dll contents now and I'll probably be able to wrap my head around it but it's going to take some time.
